The challenge

If you really want to contribute to Primark's success and have what it takes to improve on that success within a store, the Retail Management Programme is for you.

Could you run a department or an entire store, keeping the right products in the right place at the right time and keeping all of our customers happy? Could you keep the store looking visually appealing and commercially efficient? And could you maintain and motivate a creative and enthusiastic team in the store to keep it on its path to success?

At Primark we know that the real key to our success is a combination of product, price and the people we have working for us. We're always looking for new people to help to move the business on and adapt it to the ever-changing circumstances.

Career progression

As a retail management trainee with Primark, you'll be given responsibility early on in your career. This means that you'll have a real chance to prove what you're made of and meet the challenges that you'll face.

You won't be on your own - we'll help you in many ways. And if you can prove that you have drive, ambition and skills, many opportunities will open up for you. These might be within stores or at head office, in buying, merchandising, finance, human resources (HR) or store development & facilities management.

An example retail management career path within stores might be:

  • Trainee Manager
  • Department Manager
  • Senior Department Manager
  • Assistant Store Manager
  • Store Manager

What it covers

The programme is designed to give you real hands-on experience of how a store works and is broken down into these modules:

Sales floor - the sharp end of retail. All day-to-day aspects of where the customer meets the product, including customer service, staff management and merchandising.

Merchandising - this is where you get to know the products, how they're priced and how they're sold. Includes in-store displays and promotions.

Cash office - you'll learn about the processes and systems used to manage the cash taken in the store and ensure its security.

Stock room training - this will include stock control, goods inwards and administration.

Human Resource Management - Employee management and HR, health and safety and payroll procedures.

Formal training

As part of the programme we'll give you formal training to cover:

  • Management skills
  • Leadership
  • Consumer and employee legislation
  • Health and safety
  • Human Resource Management
  • Policies and procedures

Entry requirements

We look for people who have the potential to excel in organising the work of a team in line with customer, company and commercial requirements. They need to be able to identify and solve problems, organise themselves, lead their teams and contribute ideas for improvements.

  • Ideal applicants to the store retail management programme will also:
    be qualified to GCSE level (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English and
    have any of the following experience
    - 3 years in a retail sales/service, supervisory or management capacity
    - 2 years in fashion value retail
    - 2 years in team leadership 
  • be commercially aware
  • be resourceful and enthusiastic
  • have the ability to develop themselves and others
  • be committed to customer service and satisfaction
  • be organised, practical and have common sense
  • be able to demonstrate a focus on quality
  • have good communication and interpersonal skills
  • be able to work on their own initiative and in a team, sometimes under pressure
  • be confident, assertive and self-motivated
