NYC Diaries #1: Where to Eat
There’s nothing we love more than a spot of travelling here at Primark HQ – any excuse to craft an in-depth packing list and buy mini toiletries! So when New York was chosen as the location for our AW16 photoshoot, we began flexing our selfie-stick holding muscles and preparing to feast on the finest flavour the Big Apple had to offer. Since we had too much fun to keep it all to ourselves (sorry not sorry), we thought we’d share our knowledge on where to head when tasting and travelling in a two-part diary. First up, here’s where you should take your taste buds in the city that never sleeps, we’re drooling at the thought…
For street food sensations
If Mexican is your cuisine of choice and street food sings to you, then La Esquina, the Manhattan ‘speakeasy’ style restaurant is the place to go for seriously tasty flavour. Once you find your way in (it’s a quirky location where a reservation is 100% required) then prepare to feast. From crispy tortillas to juicy enchiladas, this place serves up taste sensations on the daily. Room for desert? Always. Opt for the ‘Lava de chocolate’ with one spoon, sharing is not an option.
For the caffeine connissuers
Strolling through Soho is an essential when visiting NYC, but you’re sure to need a caffeine pick-me-up to see it all. When those coffee cravings hit, head to Mercer Kitchen. Located at the Mercer Hotel on Prince Street, this sleek setting is a celebrity hotspot, with exposed brick walls and candlelit sconces (aka that dreamy snapchat filter in a light bulb). When coffee becomes a necessity, head in this direction for a break from shopping exploring.
For the ultimate veggie brunch
Brunch your favourite activity? Yep, same. Which is why The Butcher’s Daughter, juice bar and café, is where we spent most days munching through the hours 10-12. With a fine selection of pastries and brioche French toast to die for (mmm), if you like your food a little fancy and a whole lot flavoursome then please head to Kenmare Street and settle into this cool and cosy location.
For a hint of romance
Heading State-side with your bae? A romantic treat is always on the cards at Freemans restaurant. The ‘hunting lodge’ style restaurant offers a dreamy ambience for partners and pals, and the food? 3 magic words: mac and cheese. This cheesy dream is infamous, and reason alone to head to the Lower East Side. For a hint of health (pfft), opt for the avocado salad with cilantro dressing. We were seriously feeling the love – for the food obviously.
For the diner experience
Diner NYC adds a cool edge to the traditional US diner. With just as much character but a little less 50’s jukebox, if you value quality food and a quirky set up, with wonderful staff who love what they do, then Brooklyn’s converted 1920s Kullman car diner is your kinda’ place. With daily changes to the menu, there’s always a reason to return, although we must confess, it’s all about the humble burger. Traditionally delicious, with a modern diner vibe.
And with that… we’re absolutely ravenous. But for real, thinking back to our trip welcomes the tastiest memories. It’s impossible to choose our favourite amongst a sea of seriously good flavour, but the fun is in exploring. Hit up our recommendations and discover your own, after all, we all gotta eat! Stay tuned for the next instalment of our NY Diaries (we’ll venture beyond the gastronomical… maybe), and make sure to explore the range that we managed to shoot between munching below!
