Ready to Hygge...
It’s the word you’ve been hashtagging since the late last year, but have no idea how to pronounce it. It’s finding beauty in the simple every day, a little extra comfort in that early morning cup of tea, and come on, it’s the perfect Pinterest picture. It’s ‘Hygge’, the Danish-inspired movement that’s got us mourning for cosy winter evenings before they’re gone. Embracing the soul-fulfilling Scandinavian sentiment is simple; it’s a sense-encompassing experience that takes you beyond everyday menial stresses to a place of true serenity (even at work). Oh, and before you ask, it’s ‘hoo-gah’…
January evokes so much more emotion than the simple flip of a calendar; the brutal cold weather continues, but without festive spirit to compensate, the word ‘diet’ becomes as integral to everyday conversation as fluffy socks have to your sock draw, and fingertips burn as we confess financial sin to the budgeting spreadsheet we will obey this time. A month synonymous with new year resolutions and ‘turning it around’ (inspired only by the change of a day), January is the cruel older brother of December, and he just won’t leave us alone.
But what if we took the ‘blue’ out of January? Stripped all materialistic woes from the new year, and embraced the #yearofyou? What if we worried less about making our latte ‘skinny’, and more about spending time with our friends? Swapped lunch breaks scavenging the sales, for a quick phone call to a family member? Or cut the Netflix and went all out ‘chill’? That, my cold hands and warm-hearted friends, would be oh so Hygge of you. Get it?
According to Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen don’t ya know, the Hygge concept is ‘like a hug without the physical touch’ – sold.
So if we were to hear, see, smell, taste and touch Hygge, what the heck would that be like?
The home is a good place to start; a hub of relaxation, comfort, and serious snuggles. Hyggekrog (another one for the dictionary), describes a nook of the home, or comfortable corner, where you are sure to find serenity. From couch to reading chair, allocate your spot of tranquillity and unwind.
Praise be, there is such a thing as a Hygge diet, and there’s nothing low-cal about it… This lifestyle encourages all things comfort, from warm porridge to a slice of cake and every delicious goodie in between, finding happiness in flavour is finally a thing (yessssss). Food for the soul never tasted so good!
Memory-making moments are a huge aspect of Hygge too; ensuring we nurture memorable experiences as feel-good keepsakes. Turn off that pinging phone, think ‘we’ over ‘me’, and find peace within yourself. Expand that comfort zone to keep the Hygge flowing!
In short – though we could talk ‘cosy’ all day long, Hygge is not the new palm print, or the new black (let’s agree to leave that one well alone), it’s a whole new concept, an emotional obligation, and it’s something you’ve probably been exploring your whole life. So as we look to the year ahead with the usual trepidation, but ready to shake the woes of 2016, there’s truly never been a better time to get Hygge with it.
