Minimalist Mono

Written by Apphia Michael

Need some inspiration for dressing your little ones that will stand the test of the seasons, and perfectly coordinate with everything else in their wardrobe? Look no further than minimalist monochrome, perfect in its simplicity, yet always chic and on trend. Allow London-based stylist, writer, and former Online Fashion Editor at Wallpaper* Magazine Apphia Michael show you why black is always a good idea.

I love the colour black. There’s something so alluring and versatile about the it - striking and strong when paired with contrasting tones, yet subtle and pared back when blended with matching dark tones. It’s pretty much what I wear on a daily basis (Christmas, birthdays and 33-degree heat holidays included), so it seems natural, perhaps unconsciously so, that I’ve ended up dressing my kids in a palette of blacks, whites, nudes and greys.

Why do little girl have to wear pink, frills and pastel colours, and little boys sweatshirts emblazoned with pictures of superheroes or trucks? The monochrome trend we’ve been seeing on the catwalks over the past few years has worked its way into kids clothing and I’m all for it. Aside from the clean, graphic and minimal aesthetic that I’m drawn too, I want both my kids to find and explore their own comfort zones on the gender spectrum beyond society’s preconceived binary gender norms and stereotypes. Dressing Tallis in neutral colours helps me feel like I’m giving her a blank canvas to hopefully develop her own style, interests and tastes.

Primark is doing a great job exploring the monochrome story with key style pieces such as the black leather jacket, stonewashed jean and strong lace-up boot. Up until recently, I had been dressing Tallis in trousers, leggings and oversized sweatshirts but as the toddler years turn into pre-school years and the influence of books, films and what her friends are wearing becomes stronger and stronger, I’m finding the requests for skirts, princess dresses and pink fairy wings creeping in, which is totally fine by me.

Her updated wardrobe reflects this shift into a more feminine gear - for this shoot I’ve paired one of her graphically printed black sweatshirts with Primark’s tutu for a touch of softness, while the mixing and matching of different textures comes into play with the combination of Primark’s furry cream jumper, worn over a cream knitted dress with a chunky grey linen scarf.

Judging by the A/W16 catwalks, monochrome isn’t going anywhere soon. I’ll be updating our take on the trend by infusing Tallis’ wardrobe with lots of tone-on-tone pieces - I’m thinking head-to-toe blocks of neutrals such as whites, nudes or creams as well as blacks.

Her black Primark tutu will be worn with a sparkly black sweatshirt and beanie for instance, while one of my favourite outfits - the combination of Primark’s black leather jacket with an oversized tunic and matching baggy tailored trousers - will be our go-to for effortless autumnal dressing.
