Day in the life: Trey Taylor

Checking out men's fashion week with Dazed & Confused writer Trey Taylor

Trey Taylor is a Canadian born, London based writer who’s written for a diverse range of publications such as The Atlantic, The Independent, GQ, V, Interview, i-D and AnOther, whilst also contributing to the cultural journal Dazed & Confused, where Taylor held the position of film editor. We hung out with Trey at London Collections Men, London’s biannual celebration of menswear, and picked his brain about fashion and style.

When it comes to style icons Taylor found it hard to pin down just one, yet settled on One Direction’s Harry Styles. “He rocks that androgynous look really well. I like the open shirts and how he mixes designers together from the emerging to the established and uses fashion to send out positive messages.” Taylor also mentions the Garage Punk band Dolphin Project for their eclectic way of putting together garments from here and there citing, “those two know how to thrift!”

Taylor describes his own dress sense as, really minimal and pared back Skandi style.” Think clean lines and sharp cuts, garments that don’t scream but whisper and can be appreciated on closer inspection.

Taylor’s thoughts on the clothing he likes are, “expected silhouettes made with weird fabrics such as terry cloth, nylon and neoprene.” Taylor likes to add that personal touch to outfits by sharpening looks up by inserting garments into one another, “I’m super into tucking in right now – tucking my shirt into belted trousers or jeans, I really like the dangling belt look.”

Taylor found that the trouser selection in store interesting and wide-ranging, “I really liked the diverse selection of trousers from wools to the cuffed bottoms.” He also enjoyed the assortment of essentials on offer, “Primark’s great for basics such as socks and plain t-shirts.” He highly recommends the a peek-a-boo translucent nylon sports jacket - a highlight from our spring collection, “I’m into the transparent sports jacket, its really health goth looking.” It wasn’t only clothes that caught his eye, “the Bamboo and Jasmine candle smelt amazing!”

Taylor is open-minded when it comes to the division of high street and high fashion. “Things can be ugly or badly made at all fashion price points so I refuse to write anything off, when it comes to my closet I’m democratic!” His top tip when it comes to dressing happens to be “outside-in dressing: focus on your outerwear such as coats and shoes, think of it as first impressions.  A bad coat is like bad breath, baby!”

What are your top three tips to get through London Collections Men?

1. A USB Primark charger

2. Some comfortable shoes

3. A good book to avoid small talk

Five questions with Trey..

1.How did you get into fashion writing? I grew up in a really small town and I reached out to people I admired and interviewed them for my blog. It was one of the only ways I could communicate my ideas and to find out how they became successful, so I could try and emulate it.

2. What’s the best advice you’ve been given in regards to your career and what advice would you give to fledging style and culture journalists? The best I got was from Shia Lebouf, he told me to “just do it!” and he also said, “yesterday, you said tomorrow.” I always try to keep it in mind.

3. You’ve interviewed a range of individuals from film stars to influential fashion figures, who’s been the most memorable and why? If you say memorable then I would say the influential fashion photographer William Klein. He was my most difficult interview. I cold called him and when we finally got to do the interview months and several calls later, he kept asking me why I was asking each question. Then I asked one question and he opened up and told me his whole life story and I just listened for like an hour.

4. You’ve written for a variety of magazines which ones have been your favourite to write for and do you have a career highlight? A career highlight was seeing my name on Vogue and my favorite place to be had to be a Dazed, they gave me room to grow and experiment with my ideas.  Also Writing for Interview was monumental, I grew up reading it and I am obsessed with Andy Warhol.

5. Where’s your favourite city to visit and why? Sandpoint in Idaho, it’s where David Lynch grew up and its on the lake, I go camping there every year.
