4 books you need to read!
Editor’s reading list: Jaiden James
As the menswear editor at Primark, I write a lot! But I also read a lot too and nothing beats a good book especially in the summer months. I love soaking up the sun in my local park and losing myself to another world for an hour or two. If you’re planning on going away this summer then a good book is a must, from classic African literature to modern tales of plights of poverty. I’ve compiled a list of great reads to allow you to travel while you’re travelling, offering the perfect parcel for escapism.
Things Fall Apart / Chinua Achebe:
Recently I’ve been getting more and more interested and intrigued by my history and heritage (Nigerian) and ‘Things Fall Apart’ is a great place to start. It tells the story of a well-respected Nigerian warrior, Okonkwo from the Igbo tribe. The book charts the traditions and customs of pre-colonial Nigeria in rich and vivid detail. Achebe knows his stuff and it’s an outstanding novel that showcases the effects of colonisation on the nation.
Edouard Louis / The End of Eddy:
Louis is the new wunderkind of French literature, ‘End of Eddy’ was published when the author was just 21! The book tells Louis’s own tale of growing up in a small French village. And how he learned to navigate and survive in a far from pleasant world, one in which hunger was always biting. A frank read that will leave you thinking about the world we live in.
Brooklyn / Colm Toibin:
Toibin’s ‘Brooklyn’ tells the tale of a young Irish girl Eilis Lacey, who leaves her hometown for New York. ‘Brooklyn’ is an amazing book for anyone who’s thinking of packing up and starting life afresh. It’s an honest description of what it feels like to leave home for new pastures, feel homesick but push forward and eventually learn to immerse themselves in their new life.
Nothing Except My Genius / Oscar Wilde:
Sometimes I like to read lightly and it’s been said that the greatest writers know how to say the most with least words. That’s no exception with Oscar Wilde, who was always brilliant at writing lines that linger and provoke thought. ‘Nothing Except My Genius’ compiles his wittiest lines showcasing a master at his best!
So what are you waiting for if you’re bound for the beach, having a staycation or simply chilling out, all of these books offer a great read and you’re sure to be richer for reading them!
