A Love Letter To Dublin

As part of our My City, My Story, initiative, we’ve asked our cosmopolitan hosts to pen what they adore most about their cities, in a charming love letter. Dublin-based Anouska kicks off the series, with this endearing homage to the Irish capital…

Dear Dublin,

Even though I was born in the South of France, you will always be my home. I moved back and forth between France and Ireland so many times in my childhood I’ve lost count – but deciding to study in Dublin was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Even though your weather can be sometimes harsh or even miserable, some might say, you have a certain charm unlike any other European city. The people, the laughter, the craic – these things are irreplaceable. They make the four-seasons-in-one-day weather a lot more enjoyable. But Dublin, your sunny days are what I live for. When everybody is out enjoying the rare moments of blistering heat, that's when you really come alive.

I love your narrow cobblestone streets, the quirky shops and cafes, the scent of the pavement after it has rained. I love the day festivals, the markets, and how a light breeze is like a breath of fresh air.

As a city, you offer some of the most interesting style. People really know how to layer, mix and match outfits to make something really unique. I guess you would have to, since the weather can be so temperamental - you never know if you need a summer dress or a raincoat. But for that reason, people from Dublin really know how to dress for every season!

Your architecture is just as unique as you are. You won't see skyscrapers, but you will see colourful houses and apartment blocks jutting up amidst old school grey buildings. One of my favourite places to stroll around aimlessly is Trinity College. I may have never been a student there, but I've always loved walking through. The cobble stones, the juxtaposition of new and old... it's all just perfect. I've only ever been to see the Book of Kells once - and the library is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Sometimes it's good to be a tourist in your own city.

Temple bar is a hub of activity and creativity. There are many weird and wonderful characters roaming the streets full of buskers, tattoo parlours, and great restaurants. I love the weekend markets, where you'll find the same people selling their art, or the same people selling used books. It is the most touristy place in Dublin, so personally I prefer to avoid it at night time... but that's not to say I haven't enjoyed a few nights out in this melting pot of madness!

A perfect afternoon can be spent around Grand Canal Dock. My gym is there - but, unfortunately for me, there's a wonderful little Italian cafe just across the road, which sells the most gorgeous pastries and treats. I've been to the theatre a couple of times - and every time has been magical. Grand Canal Dock is like a mini version of Broadway. The production value is second to none and the gorgeous restaurants by the riverfront make for the perfect ending to a wonderful day.

All in all, Dublin, you're something else. Coming home through security after travelling, and being greeted with "Welcome home miss Brandon" gives me butterflies every time. You began as my second home - but you will always be home in my heart.

Love,

Anouska
