The Re:Mark: Boy Oh Boy!
This time last year I was fresh from my trip to the menswear tradeshow Pitti Uomo in Florence and menswear was on my mind. I had just shot an amazing ‘Day In The Life’ feature on location, and can you believe The Re:Mark column wasn’t even born yet..?
Fast forward a year and this week marks the 1st anniversary of The Re:Mark *cue the balloons and cake* and what better way to celebrate than by taking this column back to where it started and dedicating it to all things menswear. Paris Fashion Week Men’s is currently in full swing after all.
The overdressed Pitti ‘peacocks’ – so called because they strut their stuff in the iconic courtyard outside the tradeshow - are always fun to watch and bring endless amounts styling inspo to men’s tailoring. So what style notes can we take from the men in the know for surviving the heat this summer, yet retaining your chic?
‘Tis the season for summer weddings and days at the races, so I’m here to help you get your occasion wardrobe in check. Us ladies can easily survive the heat in a floaty dress and sandals, but it’s the guys I feel sorry for when a suit is called for on a scorcher of a day. The fash pack might indeed be pros at it after years of surviving Milan fashion week in mid-June, in three piece suits (ouch!), but for the mere mortals out there, allow me to point you towards the neutrals for the season.
Think sand, cream and cool blues when it comes to tailoring and keep it simple for layering. Opt for a vest or t-shirt instead of the traditional white shirt, and use it as a colour vehicle to show off your personality.
I’d suggest navy, white or pink. Yes, pink! Pink looks particularly good teamed with camel btw, and if the London catwalks are anything to go by, the bubble-gum reign could well be over for next season as hot pink enters the scene, so get ready to go bold boys!
While the catwalks give us a fast forward look into next winter, here at Primark while the sun’s shining, we’re all about the pastels hues, making sure that our tonal dressing is on point and perfectly paired for upmost impact. We’re currently courting mint green in stripes, tie dye effects and all over conversational prints – with lemon, bubble-gum pink and baby blue all playing supporting roles.
Key trends I’m keen to watch from the catwalks include; tonal dressing for casualwear as it now gains momentum, and the new vibrant brights as they continue to inject a youthful and sporty aesthetic across the board. As colour trends continue to soar on the high street, we see red make an impact on womenswear, and so there’s no doubt in my mind that menswear will be close behind.
Speaking of red hot, it might well be a heatwave in London this week, but I’d do anything to be back to Florence right now. It's where all my inspiration for this column came from after all…
