The Re:Mark: Holiday.Needed.Now!
Now in the month of May I’m having a mild panic attack that half the year has gone, and that sacred list of 2017 resolutions I made back in December is starting to feel less and less achievable. What have I been doing with my time? After all, nothing amplifies your failures more than other people's success.
As a millennial, I’m part of a generation that grew up expressing ourselves via the medium of social media. Whether that’s within the 140-character count of Twitter, in image form on Instagram, or providing a status for the world to see on Facebook, we love it! With everyone else’s social platforms telling me I’m underachieving so far this year (oh how we do love a insta-brag), this week I’m wondering whether we’ve become a stressed generation of over-sharers, or are we all just in need of a holiday?
With a commute to work each day I spend my time scrolling through Insta, Twitter and FB on the train, and I’m either propped up by the #MondayMotivation slogans, cue the fist pump, or slowly dragged down by people having ‘The. Worst. Week. Ever!’ Us millennials aren’t very good at sitting somewhere in the middle, being average or just doing ok! We like to dramatise – please be patient with us, ahem! It’s all or nothing for us emotional wrecks.
But with five months of the year gone, some of us smashing our 2017 goals, while the rest of us (read: most of us) are still wondering where all the time has gone. I think it’s high time we booked a holiday, got out of the city, chilled out and had a major digital detox. Who’s with me?
When it comes to getting away from it all, I often think that it doesn’t matter where you go, its more about taking a mental break from the day to day stress and noise. With a suitcase packed with newbies, accessories for days, and a thirst for exploring your new holiday home, you’re good to go. If you need some tips on what to pack, then allow my editors to do the talking as they prescribe you a capsule wardrobe, and give the lowdown on the essential summer staples.
If you, like me, have already used all of your holiday allowance (ahh but it was worth it!) and you won’t be jetting off anywhere any time soon, I suggest you make the most of your weekends and any up-coming bank holidays. They say you should ‘fake it til you make it’ and that’s exactly what I intend to do, because unless London has a sudden and unexpected heatwave in the next few weeks, it’ll be fake tan all the way this summer. If you promised yourself you’d really nail the tan this year, then allow us to give you a refresher course in our 6 steps to tanning.
And if our Primark Pool Party didn’t provide enough swimwear inspo first time around, I’m pleased to announce that phase two is ready and waiting for you to dive headfirst into.
So what else is there left to do but plan hard, or stay home. Chase the sun with the best of them, and relish the quiet moments when you can. Hit the continent for a beachside break, or make the most of your local lido.
Snap some pics with friends while you’re at it though, because if nothing else, it’ll give you #throwbackthursday and #flashbackfriday content for weeks once your back in the office and daydreaming yet again! I might have a love/hate relationship with social media but I definitely want to be a part of the convo, don’t you!
