The Re:Mark: Start Small
Last year I celebrated New Year’s Eve in Thailand, Phuket to be exact. The mood was high and carefree, and the responsibilities of home felt like a world away. I wrote this time last year about my resolutions for the year ahead. But this year is going to be different. To achieve great things, we need to start off small.
In December last year I documented the good, the bad and the ugly from 2016 in a bid to celebrate and commiserate, before looking forward and setting new goals. I had huge plans to regularly look back at my resolution list, that I even stored on my phone for convenience, making sure I kept on track and ticked off those goals.
Have I looked at that list much this year? About three times! Each time I smile at how much I agreed with them when I wrote it, and how I remember feeling so optimistic about the year ahead. All while I mentally curse myself for having achieved so very little!
And that in itself is the problem with resolution lists. They bring you down. This year there will be no long checklist. No record of wannabe achievements, because ultimately I’m setting myself up for a fall.
In a recent interview with Alice Liveing, fitness blogger, personal trainer and our UK Workout Ambassador, she outlined her top tips for kick starting 2018! She reminded me that small goals can bring just as much pleasure and sense of achievement as the bigger, more time consuming ambitions.
Setting smaller, more achievable goals is the way forward. Do things that you love, escape the stresses of everyday through reading more, look up from your phone and take in your surroundings, and don’t be scared to try new things. So this year, just like Alice, I’m starting small.
As we kick off 2018 at Primark, Workout is our first campaign, but this January we’re also looking at our mental health and wellbeing. After all, healthy body, healthy mind. If you’re struggling to bring clarity into your new year then look no further than our Wellness section, where we look at detoxing your wardrobe, getting the perfect night’s sleep, and minimising your home. All small, achievable goals to bring a sense of calm into your everyday!
We’ve also invited a number of movers, shakers and change makers to teach us a thing or two about being mindful, as we speak to Emma Gannon about being open about money, Erica Davies talks us through her morning routine, and make-up artist Lucy Bridge tells us how to add confidence through make-up.
So hello 2018. Goodbye to long list making, and here’s to building realistic goals for ourselves. Start small, think bijou, talk tiny and embrace the calm.
