We provide regular updates and information on the progress of our Ethical Trade and Environmental Sustainability Programme. We make public statements on certain commitments such as the Modern Slavery Act and share reports detailing the progress we are making in certain areas of our programme. These include how we are working towards particular commitments, and what steps we are taking to address a specific issue. Some reports are written in response to a group’s request for information, whilst others are more regular, such as our annual report to the Ethical Trading Initiative.

The aim of the ‘Modern Slavery Act 2015’ is to tackle human trafficking and modern slavery. For businesses, the Act states that any organisation in the UK with a turnover of over £36m is required to publish an annual statement setting out what steps it has taken during its financial year to ensure that modern slavery and human trafficking is not taking place in its own business and its supply chains.

The statement covers Primark’s policies and information on how the company addresses risks both within its supply chain and its own operations. The statement will be updated annually, as per the Modern Slavery Act 2015 guidelines.
The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) is an alliance of companies, trade unions and voluntary organisations that promotes respect for workers’ rights globally. When we became a member in 2006, we signed up to the ETI’s Principles of Implementation. These principles set out how member companies should approach ethical trade. The Principles include; demonstrating a clear commitment to ethical trade; integrating ethical trade into core business practices; driving year-on-year improvements to working conditions; supporting suppliers to improve working conditions.
As a member, we must submit an annual report to the ETI which sets out the steps we are taking to implement their Principles across our supply chain. In addition to this report, we submit a separate Strategic Plan, which outlines the objectives of our ethical trade work over the next 3-5 years.
The ETI assesses every report that we submit to them. They identify where progress has been made and where further action is required. We have been ranked as a leader by the ETI since 2011,in light of our commitment, implementation and progress, and are committed to continue working with the ETI to continuously drive improvements.
As a subsidiary of Associated British Foods plc (ABF), Primark’s ethical trade and environmental sustainability work is reported on in ABF’s annual Corporate Responsibility Report. The report includes updates on a number of corporate responsibility activities and strategic business objectives regarding ethical trade and environmental sustainability, including the progress being made by Primark’s Ethical Trade and Environmental Sustainability Team.

We signed the Greenpeace Detox commitment in 2014 undertaking to eliminate certain chemicals from our global supply chain by 2020. As part of this commitment we have increased the public availability of our restricted substance list and audit process. We also report annually on our progress on chemical management.
Every year key data from our Ethical Trade and Environmental Sustainability Programme is independently assured. The work is carried out by an independent third party and incorporates information such as how many audits we carried out in factories that year and what ethical rating factories were given in their latest audit.

We respond to requests from NGOs and other stakeholders to demonstrate how we are meeting our commitments and addressing specific issues. These include the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC) and KnowTheChain.
