Dressing the tree!

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree; too tall, too fat, too thin, too green?! Finding the perfect tree is a tricky process. But with our handy decorating tips, we’ll make sure it’s dressed to impress! Whether you’re getting ready to pop up your tree in the nick of time, for the 12 Days of Christmas only, or are sitting smugly staring at your "something’s missing" finished piece, we’re here to show you how to do it – from as little as $2.50. Think opulent decorations, gleaming lights, and real showstoppers. This is how to dress your tree!

Once your tree (real or fake) is sitting comfortably, we can start. First step? Lights, always. If you leave this step for last, you'll end up part of the decorations…

We suggest 100 lights per foot of tree for real impact, sure to light up the room with a little glitz. Start wrapping from the top of the tree, (where hiding those wires is harder!), and work your way down, avoiding that spiraled look for a more natural effect. For the fairy light fans obsessed with glow, wrap warm white lights around the center of the tree, and add a multicolored strand closer to the branch tips: the tree will appear to glow from within whilst still oozing festive funk – dreamy!

Once your tree is lit, it’s time for garland. Math, again?! Ugh. Hang in with us. For an average 6ft tree, we recommend about 8 yards of garland to make a real sparkling statement (don’t worry, our budget décor won’t use up all those present pennies!) – and again, start from the top. Remember: garland is your first chance to create a strong color scheme, so go for a shade that suits your living space. Gold is a classic pick, sure to suit your ornament collection.

Finally, the best part: infusing your tree with color and character comes from the ornaments. Whether you’ve collected family faves and handcrafted hangings over the years, or picked up a sweet new selection from your local Primark, this is where your tree comes to life. As Christmas perfectionists, we’re all for a tree that goes with our space: so a continuous color scheme (kicked off with that garland) is the way to go. Bulk-buy simple trinkets like traditional balls or snowflakes in one color to create your overall look. Spread across the whole tree, without ignoring the back, then scatter your additional pieces, popping your faves near the top. We’re firm believers in "the more Christmas glitz the better"– so sequins and glitter are sure to show up on our tree!

All that’s left is a spritz of faux snow, and presents (real or fake) squeezed under the boughs. A cheeky Christmas elf is the perfect way to inspire little ones' good behavior (he’s reporting back to Santa, didn't you know...?). So move a tiny toy across the tree tips in the run up to the 25th! With our top hacks you’ll have the perfect-looking tree in no time– meaning you can squeeze in a last-minute shopping trip to for present-buying or retail therapy (guilty)! A stunning tree in t-minus 60 minutes? Bliss.
