Ready to Hygge...
It’s the word you’ve been hashtagging since late last year – but have no idea how to pronounce. It’s finding beauty in the simple every day, a little extra comfort in an early morning cup of tea, and (hel-lo!) it’s the perfect Pinterest pic. It’s "Hygge", the Danish-inspired movement that has us grabbing the cozy winter evenings we can before they’re gone. Embracing this soul-fulfilling Scandinavian goodness is simple: it’s a sensory experience that takes you beyond everyday little stresses to a place of true serenity (even at work). Oh, and before you ask, it’s "hu-gah"…
January has so much more emotion than a simple flip of a calendar: the depressing weather continues, but without a holiday spirit boost, the word "diet" becomes as much a part of your everyday as fluffy socks in your drawer. And we financially blush at our budget spreadsheet (we will so get it together this time!)... A month synonymous with New Year's resolutions and "turning it around" (in, like, one day), January is December's bully of an older brother – and he just won’t leave us alone!
But what if we took the blues out of January? Erased money worries from the new year, and embraced the #yearofyou? What if we worried less about making our latte "skinny", and more about spending time with our friends? Swapped lunch breaks scavenging sales for a quick phone call to a family member? Or cut the Netflix and went all-out "chill"? That, my cold-handed and warm-hearted friends, would be oh-so-Hygge of you. Get it?
According to Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen (that's some impressive cred), the Hygge idea is "like a hug without the physical touch" – sold!
So if we were to hear, see, smell, taste and touch Hygge, what the heck would that be like?
Our home is a good place to start: a haven of relaxation, comfort, and serious snuggles. Hyggekrog (another one for the dictionary), describes a nook of the home, or comfy corner, where you're sure to find serenity. From couch to reading chair, find your tranquillity spot and unwind.
Hooray!! There's such a thing as a Hygge diet, and there’s nothing low-cal about it. This lifestyle encourages all things comfort, from a steaming bowl of oatmeal to a slice of cake and every yummy goodie in between – finding flavor happiness is finally a thing (yessssss!). Food for the soul never tasted so good!
Memory-making moments are a huge part of Hygge too: making sure we nurture memorable experiences as feel-good keepsakes. Turn off that pinging phone, think "we" instead of "me", and find peace within yourself. Expand that comfort zone to keep the Hygge flowing!
To sum it all up – even though we could talk "cozy" all day long – Hygge isn't the new palm print or the new black (let’s agree to let that one go), it’s a whole new concept: an emotional necessity, and something you’ve probably been exploring your whole life. So as we look to the year ahead with the usual concern (but ready to shake 2016's woes), there’s truly never been a better time to "get Hygge wit it".
