Mr Essentialist: Fall Fashion
As the seasons start to change and the colder days are drawing in, we spoke to Alexander Atkins, the man behind Mr Essentialist to ask him how he dresses for fall, and what he’ll be wearing this season. We're also keen to know his initial thoughts on our recent store opening in Boston, just a hop, skip and a jump from his native New York.
Mr Essentialist has a very sharp and slick look and we were excited to see how he would style up our autumn/winter menswear offering. Growing up in Europe has had a huge impact on his style as he embraces a continental aesthetic, “I’m always in awe of minimalists, especially the Scandinavians. Everything is so light, sleek and practical. I hate fuss, or feeling encumbered by clothes (although I do love the occasional three-piece suit)."
So now that the colder and darker months are approaching, how does he maintain his fuss-free wardrobe, when layering becomes essential? “I’ll gradually introduce light but breathable layers for insulation, and finally vests and jackets. Also, I’ll start wearing socks!”
Now we have the foundations sorted, lets move onto the important stuff – the hero pieces for the new season. Alexander introduces us to the key items he won’t be seen without for fall/winter 2015, “A super fine crewneck is key, which I’ll probably layer over a simple Henley or white collared shirt. I’ll definitely be wearing a leather jacket – that’s a given.” We like your style Alex – clever layering with timeless pieces so his look never looks out of place. Smart move!
In line with our recent store opening in Boston, out first foray into the US market, we were keen to hear Alexander’s expert opinion on the current collection, “I chose a few pieces and I’m impressed! I wore the blazer to lunch today. It was perfect – slightly box-cut, which I love. I’m keeping it handy at the office to grab for unexpected meetings, etc.”
So we asked him to choose a few items from the current collection and style them up in his own way. After spending four years living in Scotland, Alexander found a new love for all thinks checked and plaid so we it’s no surprise that he is coining this look as ‘Lumbersexual’ Alexander – we salute you!! He explains, “Honestly, I’m a sucker for plaid and don’t wear it nearly enough! I saw this jacket and thought I’d give it a go…”
Now that we know what he’ll be wearing all season we dug a little deeper to find out the top three survival items that always get Alexander through the Fall season, “I need a great all-purpose skin salve, acetate sunglasses and a good TV show (most recently Narcos on NetFlix).”
