A Day In The Life: Ollie Darani
In June the Menswear calendar is always a busy and interesting time: it's when the "peacocks" parade, and for one whole month it’s all about the guys! In the office it’s a time when the Menswear team are buzzing with ideas. Our own Men’s buyers get to bop around the globe to scope out the latest looks from catwalk to sidewalk. Snapping pics of the coolest guys in town. We hung out with Ollie Darani while he gathered inspo from the shows and the street. Ollie interned at Primark before being offered a job as a Buyer’s Admin Assistant, and was recently promoted to Trainee Buyer for the men’s jersey.
“I get inspiration everywhere,” Ollie muses as we wander through Covent Garden Market, looking at vintage clothes and trinkets. “I love London because there’s such a range of styles like skate, street and punk.” When asked about his own style, Ollie settles on "a mix of streetwear, designer and Main Street."
When asked who he admires style-wise, Ollie lands on "ASAP Rocky: whatever he puts on, he wears it well." Ollie likes how Rocky’s style is expansive and he dresses well for different events. "From dressy separates to ripped jeans, he can look good in just about anything."
About his outfit pick for this event, Ollie explains “This look was largely based around layering: I went for linen blends which are perfect for the season, and colors that worked well together like navy and stone.”
Ollie firmly believes LC:M is a good thing because Menswear is often ignored: “It’s always been on the back burner in fashion terms but these are exciting times. It goes to show how serious everyone is now that there’s a premium event in each of the major European fashion capitals like Paris, Milan and London.”
What's a typical day in your life like? "First I check emails, which informs my workload and gives me a daily agenda. Then manage samples by posting, filling, arranging, measuring and raising orders."
How did you get into fashion buying?"I was in high school and was inspired by a store visit. It showed me the power of visual merchandising. So I researched the different jobs in the industry and applied for Fashion Retail Academy in London."
What advice would you give to newbie buyers? "No matter how many times you get knocked down, stay positive, determined and ambitious."
What’s your favorite part of the job? "The scope of the experience from admin to trendspotting at festivals, the fast pace, and that no two days are alike."
Where’s your fave city to visit and why? "Amsterdam, for its laid-back culture: people are so open and friendly. Also the fashion has a good balance of high and low. It’s a beautiful city with loads to do, from Van Gogh Museum to Anne Frank’s house, or just cycling through it and taking in the landscapes."
