A Day In The Life: Jermaine
Fathers have a special bond with their child, that's unique throughout their lives. With first lessons learned and views imprinted, fathers take on the role of protector and mentor, from birth to adulthood. Appreciating one’s old man isn't just for Father’s Day! And it's not just about gifts, since time and energy is a present. Staying switched on after a hard day's work is a big task. But it’s the only way to fully appreciate and capture each moment shared.
With fatherhood in mind, we hung out with Primark’s own Womenswear Design Controller, Jermaine Lapwood, and his son Camden on a boys' day out at Legoland in Windsor. If you follow Jermaine on Instagram you’ve probably come across him and his son as they run around Dublin on their many adventures.
As someone working in the fashion industry, we had to ask how Jermaine’s style has adapted to and been influenced by becoming a dad: “My style as a dad hasn’t changed, it's just evolved to be more practical." He explains how he dresses Camden: “Personally I like a preppy, classic look for work, but prefer edgy and young for the weekends; both styles are brought together in Camden’s wardrobe.” Jermaine's a fan of style icons like “James Dean, the master of looking good without seeming to care. Or Pharrell Williams: I love that he's true to his personal style and identity.”
Being a parent means learning on the job, constantly adapting. What you imagine is totally different from reality! Jermaine explains: “An important thing I learned with Camden is kids do as you do, more than they do as you say. They're like sponges, so finding the right work/family life balance and being a good example is important.” Learning doesn’t just stop with parenting, it also applies to personal development: “Learning patience is a big change - accepting you don't understand and learn everything overnight." Jermaine also talks about how his son has inspired him: “Camden has helped me step out of my comfort zone of worrying about people’s perceptions. His current favorite game is crawling around on all fours in the park pretending to be a dog from his favorite show, 'Paw Patrol'. I play the Rubble Crusher!”
We asked Jermaine for his top parenting hacks: “Always carry spare clothes and baby wipes - never forget the baby wipes!” On any setbacks to being a dad, Jermaine sees the humor in it all: “Only being able to go on vacation on school breaks - when prices are highest; watching Disney movies on repeat 5 times a day; and having to line up for the teacup ride!”
Five questions for Jermaine:
How did you get into fashion design, and do you have any advice for aspiring designers? "Fashion's always been a creative outlet for me. I designed sneakers in the back of my schoolbooks as early as age 11. My advice is do what you love until you can make a living out of loving what you do."
How would you describe your work at Primark and what's your favorite part of the job? "My job's mostly managing a team of talented fashion designers. My favorite part is seeing an exciting new collection every season and our customers wearing it."
What's your fave city to visit and why? "I love visiting my hometown, London - because I can always find a babysitter if I want to have a night out without the baby wipes!"
Any lessons your dad taught you that you want to pass on? "Work hard to create the life you love"
What are some your fave things to do with Camden? "I love having new experiences with him: anything and everything he does for the first time, while he's young."
