Philadelphia Love Letter

We think it goes without saying that Philadelphia has a place in all our hearts. If not for its place in pop culture (Fresh Prince theme tune, anyone?) then surely for the epic invention that is the Philly cheesesteak (wait—what do you mean you HAVEN’T had one?!). And—as if you needed more reasons to visit!—it’s worth noting Primark set down its flag in 2015, signaling the opening of its second US store, in the King of Prussia Mall. Helloooo dream vacay...

Okay (so although it might kinda be our ideal combo), TV shows, sandwiches, and shopping don't do the city total justice. So we caught up with fashion blogger Ian Michael Crumm, to give us the official lowdown.

Primark

Dear Philadelphia,

You are the "City of Brotherly Love"—and sisterly affection.

Since coming to this history-rich metropolis to go to Drexel University, I’ve fallen in love with your deep artistic and culinary roots. Some of my fave things to do include exploring the new restaurants that seem to appear every week. From the charming Bar Hygge in Fairmount to Rittenhouse’s newest dining star, Scarpetta, in The Rittenhouse Hotel, there’s never a shortage of tasty bites. Your food choices range far and wide, from quick and VERY tasty cheesesteaks (you knew that was coming…) to 5-star meals at renowned spots hosted by celebrity restaurateurs, like Jose Garces and Michael Schulson. It’s obvious: I am deeply in love with your foodie scene!

And Philly, when I’m not devouring dishes, I’m soaking up your rich art scene. The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation are two of my fave places to visit, relax, and get inspired. When time is tight and I’m rushing around town, the enormous range of public art always keeps me inspired, too. Murals, sculptures, and pop-up installations fill the streets, alleys and hearts of Philadelphia.

Let’s not forget your shopping... Oh, yes: the shopping! Your Center City residents live conveniently just steps away from the Chestnut and Walnut shopping hubs, with international retailers anchoring the busiest area of the city. Then of course there's the King of Prussia Mall, with its fantastic Primark! There is so much to love about you, Philly—it’s hard to put it all into one article! Here are some of the places I love most…

Reading Terminal Market

The famous farmer’s market is a favorite spot to grab a tasty and affordable lunch. With food choices from around the globe, housewares, specialty shops, and a convenient location near City Hall, it’s no wonder the Reading Terminal Market's been around since 1892!

Hotel Monaco

Step into Hotel Monaco’s living room and get a glimpse of the world. The eclectic interior conjures up a house owned by a seasoned world traveler, with a keen eye for design and an appreciation for pops of color. It’s one of my favorite spots to stay when I need a little staycation from my apartment. The hotel's also just steps away from the Liberty Bell in Old City.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

With its grand Greek Revival architecture, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is eye candy for the world traveler. Home to the famous “Rocky Steps” and “Rocky Statue,” city visitors make the walk, hop, or sprint up the stairs towards the PMA every day. Inside, you'll find a stunning mix of some of the museum’s 240,000 archived pieces.

Ice Max

This Thai ice cream parlour serves rolls of ice cream that have gone viral on social media. Liquid cream is poured onto a freezing slate, where toppings are added, chopped, scraped, and squished into the mix. The ice cream is flattened on the frozen slate, and rolled into mini burrito-like forms. It’s a trendy way to eat ice cream, and also a sweet way to capture a foodstagram!

Pizza Brain

The world’s first pizza museum! Found in Fishtown, this place is one of my fave places to grab a bite. Pick from gourmet pizza flavors and sit surrounded by a bunch of pizza posters and memorabilia. In the back there's a cool painted art wall: you can see it in the photo where I’m stuffing my face with a gigantic slice! Love that pizza!!

Sampan

With neon tree walls, mini ice cream cones, and the BEST shishito peppers in town, Sampan reigns supreme in Philadelphia’s Asian-fusion culinary scene. Must-try dishes are the pork bao buns, shishito peppers, crispy Brussels sprouts, edamame dumplings, and the xo scallops. Don’t forget to order the mini ice creams after dinner!

And finally, how could I profess my undying love for you, Philadelphia, without mentioning the coffee haven La Colombe—inventors of the "draft latte". Think smooth, frothy, and with a tiny bit of sweetness: the draft latte is to the barista as the beer draft is to the bartender. Aside from coffee’s greatest invention, La Colombe’s various locations offer fresh-baked pastries and other local treats that seem far superior to other coffee chains. Swing into the Fishtown location and you’ll have a full breakfast and lunch menu to order from. YUM. Just don’t forget my draft latte...!

Lots of love,

Ian
