7 Hacks for Enjoying the Euros

Pack your bags and throw on your soccer shirt: the Euros are back! It’s been four years since Spain took the trophy for the second time in a row. Since then, we’ve spent our time thinking up "fire the ref!" Facebook statuses – and trying to get rid of vuvuzelas. Well soccer peeps, it’s here – the competition has started and we are Totally. Psyched. Rather see Cristiano Ronaldo in your dreams than on the soccer field? No worries! We’re a generous bunch here at Primark, so we’re serving up 7 hacks for enjoying the Euros. Whether or not you’re a fan, there’s no escape – so let’s kick off…

1. Brush up on your French!

1. Brush up on your French

Time to learn some of the basics. The Euros are hosted by France this year, so why not get to grips with the "language of love" and negotiate your way through the streets with confidence? A "bonjour" may have earned you decent grades in high school, but it won’t get you far when ordering a pre-match croissant or finding your way back to the hotel – so spring for a phrasebook or language app.

2. Get your barbecue on

2. Get your barbecue on

Watching the games from home? A BBQ is a Euros must. Nothing says team spirit like pickles and potato salad: it’s a summer tradition. Get the burgers, hot dogs, and s'mores skewers on the grill: if you don't have something-in-a-bun in one hand and a flag in the other, you’re not a true supporter!

3. Get comfy

3. Get comfy

Time to deepen that dip in the sofa – because you'll be stuck to it for the next month! Set up the ultimate supporter scene: snacks(three chip flavors, keeps things interesting) puffy cushion (excited punching), and one of those drink hat thingies with a straw (makes good use of that Secret Santa gift).

4. Embrace flags

4. Embrace flags

Unspoken Euros Rule: you’re not a real supporter unless you stick the flag of the country of your choice on everything that will stay still. Flying from the car antenna? Check. Bedroom windows? Check. Wearing as a cape? Check. You know the drill: if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em. Literally all of them – because flags are like EVERYWHERE.

5. Choose your face paint wisely

5. Choose your face paint wisely

We love us some cheek art. Flagless face=fraud. Pick your paint tools wisely for post-match scrub-off. It looks good in the stadium (or party), but lining up green-faced for takeout or walking around with flag color smeared all over your chin two weeks later is not cool. Paint wisely, fans.

6. Follow the crowd

6. Follow the crowd

The lyrics to Rihanna’s "Work" make more sense to you than the offside rule? Only one thing to do – follow the crowd. If Dad's yelling at the TV, go for it. If fans next you start freaking out with joy, get your high-five ready. And when someone kicks off a wave, pay attention – you cannot mess that up.

7. Embrace it!

7. Embrace it!

Whatever sport you love, it’s always fun to support a country. Whether you’re the betting and hoping for some sweet cash, or losing your voice screaming in the crowd, your team may not win but it's a blast cheering.

So YouTube some national anthems and stick on a jersey. The Euros are one helluva party – whether or not you accept the invite, you’ll be caught up in the action ‘til July 10th. So start warming up!
