Sweater weather might just be our fave kind. It’s warm enough for layering (we heart layers), but not cold enough for a coat (which means your knitwear game has to be on point!). Since it's on its way, we have a few stylish and practical tips and tricks to work for you when you’re wearing and caring for your threads this season.

Knitwear's gone tonal for FW16, with everything from oatmeal to olive and blush to rust turning up. All these earth tones blend beautifully together, and are complemented by nature’s own fall colors. The shades also have a retro vibe, looking especially throwback paired with faux suede, A-line shapes and preppy accessories.
Classic black and gray look super-chic with a white shirt collar, so get set to layer up your fave shirts for an office-friendly #OOTD.
So: what shapes should you be buying? Fall/Winter '16 throws out a few curveball cuts as well as super-trad basics. The bodysuit has to be one of the biggest surprise pieces, with sleek fine-gauge knit turtlenecks popping up—letting you tuck in your knitwear while avoiding (horror!) unpleasant fabric bulge.
In other news, longline is also key, showing the continued obsession with longer lengths seen all over sportswear and menswear the past few seasons. Sleeves drop below traditional lengths, and necklines get a shake-up: think extreme bateau-necks, shoulder-baring semi-Bardots, and cocooning cowls.
When it comes to caring for your knitwear, it’s SUPER important to keep the temp low – too hot, and you’re basically asking for major shrinkage. If you have the time/patience/will, ideally hand-wash your knit goodies and lay them flat to dry, so they don’t stretch.
Knitwear pills or pulls can be so devastating. Does it always seem to happen to your most beloved pieces? We hate to tell you, but it’s not a coincidence. With excess wash and wear, pilling will happen. This disastrous phenomenon comes from tiny fibers rubbing together and getting tangled. How to avoid? The only way is to wash the piece as little as humanly possible, and use a soft conditioning detergent when you just have to launder. Not sure about you, but we basically need one of each!
