The Re:Mark: Tickled Pink
For all those millennials out there, you, much like me, will associate pink with your youth. I mean, what do all those candy shades bring back? Barbie, Legally Blonde, Hubba Bubba, Polly Pocket, Trolls... half of Cher from Clueless’ clothes... Pink is – yet again – coming back as a key color for SS17, and this time it’s not just for the girls! But what is it about pink that keeps it looking fresh, without the sugar-coated color getting sickly sweet?
"Pink to make the boys wink" (cue the eye roll): we all know we’ve come a looong way since those days – and for 2017, I think it might just be the other way around. Finally, guys and girls are on the same page when it comes to THE shade to be wearing this spring/summer. Enter fuchsia, rose, salmon, blush, pastel and nude, for menswear and womenswear too. Whichever way you spin it, there's a shade for you: this (not so) new color on the block is all over the street and our closets right now!
Pink wasn’t majorly on my radar when I was a teen– and due to my life-long love affair with all shades blue, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have made it into the Pink Ladies anyhow. But since growing up, I’ve def added the sweet shade into my makeup kit – nail polish and lipsticks for days – but not so much my wardrobe... This week, however, my head has been turned.
What is it about the flirtatious flush that keeps the pinkaholics coming back for more? For a long time, wearing pink simply was Not. Cool. It was strictly princesses-and-party-dresses, and the boys wouldn’t be caught dead in it. Oh how times have changed!! Is it the mood boost the color gives us? Or the fact it's associated with all things romantic? Why DO we keep frequenting fuchsia?
It’s all about the bold, blushed beauties for womenswear, with hues so hot they’re almost turning red. With splashes of candy, rosé and the palest of pastels infiltrating this trend from spring right through summer, I personally have a "more is more" attitude when it comes to wearing color – after all no one works in fashion to blend in with the crowd! So you might as well make a statement when going bold.
Pair our peony pantsuit with a pale pink cami, pile on the gold jewelry, and don’t forget the pink lipstick.
Boys have a softer side this season, with dusty chalk pinks and warm nudes flooding our athleisure collection. With hoodies, bombers, distressed tees and joggers all getting the treatment, you know these will blend perfectly with spring AND summer wardrobe basics. As athleisure moves away from being a trend and becomes a lifestyle, could it be that all the cozy jersey and soft cottons we've made everyday essentials look that much fresher in a rich rose?
I already know I’m about to add our longline hot pink sweater to my wardrobe, plus the menswear pastel-pale hoodies for my gym bag, too – they are oh-so-perfect for post-spin when the brunch bar is calling! Still need convincing? Let our guest editor Rebecca Gillam walk you through the must-have pieces and how to wear them in her Think Pink feature this week.
We all love to borrow from the boys: the boyfriend jeans, oversized cozy knits, and super-soft longline tanks rock. But are we now seeing a move towards borrowing from the baes? With pink flowing straight from little girl dreams onto the menswear catwalks, it has most definitely been repositioned as a color for everyone. And with so many new products dropping in-store every day, there is def enough to go around for him and for her!
