The Re:Mark: Wanna Follow Suit?
First we had the pink suit phenom, then it was the gray and white checked blazer, and now Main Street is piled with pantsuits for us girls. Always dubbed "power dressing," I wondered: was there something to it? Can your style picks actually make you feel different? I decided to find out.
The catwalks were inundated with menswear-style tailoring for SS17 – and now Main Street's following suit (pun intended!). On the runways it was the bold brights and daring prints that caught my eye: retailers aren't holding back when it comes to translating these designer looks to their Main Street buyers. I’m not one to dress to the nines for work every day – but I do have a constant internal battle about how to dress nicer for work while still staying on-trend (and feeling comfy).
With the lines between officewear and daywear getting more blurred all the time, the art of dressing up for work (especially in the creative industry) is long gone. However, there are some days when casual just won’t cut it!
I decided to see what all the fuss was about, investing in a gray double-breasted blazer with shoulder pads (NOT the massive jobs from the 80's!). My first impressions? I LOVED it! The look was dressy but flattering: the blazer nipped in at the waist, had a strong shoulder and a chic longer-line cut.
The best part? It looked just as good with my ripped boyfriend jeans and loafers as it did with dressy skinny pants and heels. Worn buttoned (top button only though: button both and say buh-bye to your fashion cred!) the look was finished and professional – but worn open, a loose, casual vibe took over.
And you know what? I felt different, too. Professional, in control and able to tackle the day. There really is something to this power dressing thing after all!
So what about you? What’s your personal ammo? Maybe you feel your best when your makeup's on point. Or is a bold matte lip your go-to to feel like a true girl boss (they say women who wear a bold lip go further in their career, just FYI)? Or maybe you just like to be the first to try the latest makeup trend (like feeling Mermazing...).
Rather wear your fave skinny jeans to the office everyday and let your shoes show your mood? Let me point you in the right direction... We have summer shoes to get you through every work-related event: strategy meetings, working lunches...and landing that promotion!
Not convinced yet? I urge you to try on a attitude-empowering blazer! After all, the days when "tailored" meant dull, drab, black and navy are LONG gone. Color and florals lead the way this season, and a new longer-line shape and deep V-front blazers make this look much easier to wear.
