Primark joins German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles

    Primark today joined the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles (Textilbündnis) further underlining its long standing commitment towards achieving social, environmental and economic improvements throughout the textile supply chain, a goal shared with the Textilbündnis.

    Primark has today announced a six year extension of the Primark Sustainable Cotton Programme, a partnership designed to support women from traditionally male-dominated farming communities in Gujarat, India, to introduce sustainable farming methods, improve cotton yields and increase their incomes.

    Primark notes the actions being taken by the Bangladesh courts against a number of individuals in relation to the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in 2013 and the recent media coverage of this. Primark was shocked and saddened by the Rana Plaza disaster, and that is why Primark responded by taking the many steps that it has.

    A Primark spokesperson said: “The Primark name is being used to gain publicity for the plight of this individual. We have found no link at all between this individual and any of our suppliers’ factories in China. We think it is likely that the note was added after production and it is feasible it was added in transit or at a port.”

    Primark’s commitment to supply chain sustainability

    Primark is committed to reducing the impact that it has on the environment, and as part of that commitment it has joined the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). Primark will use the SAC’s sustainability tool, the Higg Index, which measures environmental sustainability, to help drive continuous improvement across its supply chain.
