Dressing the tree!
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree; too tall, too fat, too sparse, too green?! Finding that perfect tree is one tricky process, but with our handy tips for decorating, we’ll make sure it’s dressed to impress! Whether you’re preparing to pop up your tree in the nick of time, for the 12 days of Christmas only, or you’re smugly sat staring at your ‘something’s missing’ finished piece, we’re here to show you how it could be done, from as little as £1/€1.50! Think opulent decorations, gleaming lights, and real showstoppers. This is how to dress your tree!
Once your tree, real or fake, is sitting comfortably, we can begin. First step? Lights, always. Should you leave this step ‘til last, you will end up as part of the decorations…
We suggest 100 lights per foot of tree for real festive impact, this is sure to light up the room with a little glitz. Start wrapping from the top of the tree, (where hiding those wires is a little trickier!), and work your way down, avoiding that spiralled look for a more natural effect. For the fairy light queens obsessed with glow, wrap warm white lights around the centre of the tree, and add a multi-coloured strand closer to the branch tips – the tree will appear to glow from within whilst still oozing festive funk; dreamy!
Once your tree is ‘lit’ (we couldn’t resist), it’s time for tinsel. Maths, again?! Urgh. For an average 6ft tree we’d recommend around 8 metres of tinsel to make a real sparkling statement (don’t worry, our budget decs won’t take up all those present pennies!), and once again, start from the top. Remember, tinsel is your first opportunity to create a strong colour scheme, so opt for a shade that suits your living space. Gold is a classic choice and is sure to suit your bauble selection!
Finally, the best part, infusing your tree with colour and character lies in the bauble hanging. Whether you’ve compiled your collection throughout the years with family favourites and handcrafted hangings, or picked up a beaut new selection from your local Primark store, this is where your tree comes to life. As Christmas perfectionists, we’re all for a tree that suits our space, so a continued colour scheme (kick started with that tinsel), is the way to go. Bulk buy simple trinkets, such as traditional baubles or snowflakes, in one colour to create your overall look. Spread across the whole tree, without ignoring the back, then scatter your additional decorations, popping your faves near the top. We’re firm believers of ‘the more glitz the better’ come Christmas time, so sequins and glitter are sure to feature on our tree!
All that’s left is a spritz of fake snow and presents (real of fake), squeezed beneath the pines. A cheeky Christmas elf is the perfect way to inspire good behaviour in the little ones (he’s reporting back to Santa Claus don’t you know?), so move a tiny toy across the tree tips in the run up to the 25th! With our top tips you’ll have the perfect-looking tree in no time, meaning a last-minute trip to the shops for present-buying or retail therapy (guilty), can squeeze into your schedule. A stunning tree in t-minus 60 minutes? Bliss.
