LCM Trend Report- Smart Casual

Twice a year London Collection Men turns London’s streets into a catwalk. Dandies, peacocks and other stylish individuals strut their stuff and show their wares. Whilst LCM is primarily a showcase for fashion, it’s also a celebration of style. We worked with Photographer Holly McGlynn to capture a diverse range of stylish individuals. These looks have been compiled into trend reports. For this report we look at the merging of smart & casual codes of dress

Smart casual is simply about not looking too dressed up or too dressed down. Casually cool without fully crossing over into either domain, creating a new mode and code of dress.  There's no rules to dressing casually smart, yet there's limits. Although it's about looking sharp without being restrained it's also about not looking slack. So for example wearing your gym joggers with your smartest blazer doesn't instantly mean you've nailed the look, it's about building up an outfit that includes elements of both.

Smart items could include blazers, tailored shirts or trousers, crew or round neck knitted jumpers, Mackintosh or trench coats. Whilst when thinking about casual items t-shirts, jersey sweatshirts, flannel shirts, harrington or bomber jackets and jeans. Items that sit in the middle ground include cardigans, polo shirts and chinos.

Wearing a suit doesn’t have to mean that you’re restricted and sportswear doesn't have to be technical, fluid and free flowing. Sportiness and smartness used to be opposites yet now they can meet in the middle, creating a relaxed restraint.

Think of smart casual like maths, if you add something smart then it detracts from the casual and vice versa. Keep balance in mind, in order to link the two. It's advised not to get too carried away and let smartness over dominate the casual or the other way around.

A great way to adopt this look is to think about hybrids. Like cuffed formal trousers, shirts with looser fits or zips and nylon blazers. Artfully taking the formality out of formal wear and function out of sporting wear. This helps to create a distinctive comfortable outfit that's adaptable to different situations and settings, making it hard to be too dressed up or down.
