Day in the life: Adam Gaffey

An insiders view of LCM with MFI editor Adam Gaffey

Adam Gaffey is the founder and editor of the cultural publication, Men’s Fashion Ireland. Launched just two years ago, the title has fast become one of the go to platforms for men’s style. Born and raised in Dublin, Gaffey is passionate about the fashion industry in Ireland and this is evident in his commitment to young Irish talent. The editor wants to use his magazine to promote the creative scene in his homeland pushing and challenging his contributors to produce interesting and exciting work. We caught up with him over LCM to talk about his style and influences.

Gaffey describes his own style as ‘sports luxe’, a mix of sports inspired shapes with luxe finishes, a fusion of comfortable and casual.  When it comes to selecting a style icon, Gaffey decides upon the rapper A$AP Rocky, the experimental fashion chameleon, who tops best-dressed lists consecutively. “He’s changing the stereotype of streetwear with a quirky influence.” Rocky’s style mixes high-end streetwear paired with smarter items such as camel driving coats and long line shirts.

The editor explains his process of getting ready for LCM, “There’s a lot of planning each day to prepare for shows and events so organising invites and a schedule each day is key, and a good breakfast.”

With everyday being different there’s no such thing as a typical day at fashion week, Gaffey breaks down what he does and how he does it.

“LCM is great - It’s four days of innovative collections which we (the team) take inspiration from. There were six of us this season. Our online editor and my co-director Michelle Walsh photographs front-of-house and our   fashion editor James Butler and myself report on the catwalk collections, there’s an exciting atmosphere over the weekend.”

What are your top three tips to get through London Collections Men?

1.  During the winter, coats

2. A power pack to keep my phone charged

3. Good reading material

Five questions for Adam...

1.How did you get into magazine editing? I founded MFI over two years ago as an online platform, for creative artists to express their creativity within the menswear industry in Ireland.

2. What’s the best advice you’ve been given in regards to your career & what advice would you give to fledging magazine editors? My mother always told, that you can never stop learning. That’s something that always stuck with me. I love trying new things and learning from all the creative people that I work with, it’s exciting.

3.  What’s the ethos behind Men’s Fashion Ireland? MFI strives to push boundaries in the Irish fashion industry, through innovation and creativity. We bring international fashion to Ireland and expose Irish menswear to an International audience. It's important that Irish talent gets recognition and that's a core aspect of our brand.

4. What interested you most about men’s fashion and how would you describe the fashion scene in Dublin? I have always been an expressive person, whether it’s through the form of music, or art, so when you achieve the desired results from work that your team are passionate about and it to be appreciated - that’s a great feeling. The fashion scene is growing in Dublin at an impressive pace, so it’s a great time to grow with that too.

5. Where’s your favourite city to visit and why? I was in Rotterdam last year. I would love to go back there.
