Day in the life: Douglas Cain

A sneak peek into the day in the life of one of our buyers

Douglas Cain is our men’s buying office admin assistant based in our Reading head office. Cain is a recent addition to the Primark team, in a newly created role that Cain won after interning for the brand during the summer. Cain recently relocated from Manchester to begin his career in fashion. We caught up with Cain to talk all things fun and fashion.  Throughout the day we gained an insight and understanding into his role and the intricate process behind each garments creation.

When it comes to choosing an individual who's style stands out Cain decides upon Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner, “ Turner has an effortless sense of style, he’s gone from careless and casual, to smart and stylish”.

Cain’s own style depends on the mood and occasion, “Day to day I love wearing streetwear pieces such as trainers, jeans or hoodies. If I was out and about in London I’d dress more formally, like a nice pair of loafers, tailored trousers, a shirt or maybe a blazer or wool coat to finish the look. " One style tip that Cain offers is, “If in doubt keep it simple and don’t try too hard.” Describing his inspiration behind the outfit he created for LCM Cain discusses his approach to dressing in general, “When creating a look or an outfit, I like to mix fabrics, tones and shapes and that’s how I approached this outfit from the denim shirt, jersey long sleeved t-shirt and the statement canvas Farrell parka”.

Working for a high street retailer Cain appreciates the impact and effect that fast fashion retailers have on the overall landscape, “I like both highstreet and high fashion, I think the former offers a great range of key fashion pieces at reasonable prices, however I do also love high fashion and will happily splurge on a statement piece by one of my favourite designers.” When it comes to Primark Cain believes that we’ve evolved and that some people’s perceptions don’t match up to today’s output. “I think a lot of people think of Primark of how it used to be and see us as a store that sells basics, but they’d be surprised to see how trend led the brand has become and how progressive we are as a company on a whole."

What does a normal day in your life consist of?  A normal day for me is liaising with the three buyers of the three different departments I currently work under. We’ll then formulate an action plan for the day, which could consist of order raising, measuring up development samples to ensure the fit meets our guidelines or researching the current retail landscape.

How did you get into fashion buying? I’ve always had an interest of getting into the fashion world as a career path. It was actually a friend that already worked for the company that put me in contact with Primark. I came down for a two-week internship last summer in the  menswear buying department and really enjoyed my time there. When a position opened up, I applied and thankfully got it!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given in regards to your career and what advice would you give to fledgling buyers? I remember being told that if you wanted to start a career in high street fashion, Primark is the best place to start! It’s one of the most rapidly evolving companies within the sector. As a fledgling buyer myself (!) One piece of advice would be to gain as much experience as you can in different areas of fashion so you know where you want to work depending on the pace, if it’s high street or high fashion.

How would you describe your role at Primark and what’s your favourite aspect of the job?  I work within a small team of buyers in the leisurewear department, where we work on developing stock to our high standards to ensure that the product we’re working on meets the trend criteria at a competitive price point.  My favourite aspect has to be seeing the journey the garment takes from the samples creation to when it hits store and most importantly when you see it worn on somebody.
