5 Ways I Deal With My Anxiety
This Mental Health Awareness Week we spoke to our menswear ambassador Kem Cetinay and asked him to open up about his personal experiences with anxiety.
You might know him more for his time on Love Island and his swimwear collaboration with us (obvs), but did you also know that due to being so honest about his history of anxiety and through his work with Childline he has been named their first Mental Health Campaigner, working closely with the young people they support? Kem tells us, in his own words, about his journey with anxiety and shares his advice for anyone else going through the same.
Anxiety is a huge part of my life and it’s something I’ve grown to accept and not be ashamed of. When I was growing up I was always scared of having panic attacks and it affected me for a large part of my childhood. I started to develop anxiety when I was 13 and since then I’ve found many ways of dealing with it that really help me to manage and live with it.
Here are the top 5 ways I have found to cope with and lessen the effects of my anxiety;
1. Being around my family and friends
2. Exercise, this keeps me grounded and feeling positive
3. Taking a step back to look at the bigger picture from time to time, and to worry less about what’s in front of me
4. Talking to people about how I feel
5. Writing down what I’m grateful for
Looking back on where I was when my anxiety first started, and then focussing on where I am now is really helpful when I want to keep things in perspective, and to celebrate how far I’ve come. If I could give some advice to my younger self, and to any others suffering from anxiety, I’d say to remember that you’ll overcome what you’re going currently through, you need to stop being so down on yourself and you should be more positive about the future, because good things are coming.
