The Re:Mark: Denim Desire
Written by Jayne Bibby
Jeans are my go-to for most occasions. Never do I feel more comfortable than in my favourite pair of ripped denims. Whether it’s my slouchy boyfriends, high-waisted skinnies, or faded vintage pair, there is a pair in my wardrobe to suit all occasions. Dressed up or down, they are a girl’s best friend.
It’s no secret that girls have been borrowing jeans from their boyfriend's wardrobes for years - after all where do you think the term ‘boyfriend fit’ came from? Maybe it was the love worn appeal of the lived-in denim that drew us in, but it was the fit that kept us coming back.
The boys may have kept it more of a secret that they were borrowing from the girls too, especially when spray-on skinny jeans were having a moment; those indie boy bands have a lot to answer for. A number of my male friends have admitted to wearing Primark ladies skinnies in the past as it gave them the extra tight fit they were after, not to mention they were a snip at just £8.
Fast forward nearly 10 years and a host of retailers and designer brands alike are embracing this line of thought, and gender fluidity is taking the high street by storm. Whether a genderless clothing line is the way forward, or you’re simply happy to hit the men’s/women’s department in search of your preferred fit, it’s never been easier to achieve your denim desires.
But that’s not all. Denim is really having a moment this season and I’m no longer talking about silhouette – it’s now all in the detail.
Across the board the everyday favourite has received artisanal updates from hand painted finishes, to floral embroidery and applique patch working. Never has it been easier to put your own stamp on what you’re wearing and it doesn’t have to break the bank either.
Embroidery is making denim a serious head turner, seen first on the catwalks and now at high street level too. Statement-making bold florals in poppy red, rose pink and jungle green can be found decorating the leg panels and collars of our Mom-fit jeans and denim trucker jackets. And we have hand painted finishes coming into store later in the season too – keep you eyes peeled for that beautiful bespoke look! Kidswear are getting in on the action too with star and floral prints available for autumn/winter; so even the little ones can get the cheeky update to their denim.
As my house move gets ever closer I will most definitely be spending my weekend knee deep in packing boxes – oh the glamour. But I know my oldest and softest boyfriend jeans will get me through. Or maybe I’ll rock out the denim dungarees to really give the removal men a run for their money – after all it’s never been chicer to be a denim diva!
