Primark Womenswear Designer AW16 LFW Day in the Life

Primark HQ Diaries: Day In The Life

This month, our ‘Day in the Life’ series continues, and this time we’ve been hanging with one of our very own: meet Emma, our denim and jersey womenswear designer. We get to chill with some of the coolest people, see what they get up to, and ask them all sorts of questions – mainly because we’re insatiably curious, but also because we want to give you the low down on Team Primark. This is for anyone who’s ever wondered if those incessant schoolbook doodles could blossom into a career…

Rocking her bomber jacket and mom jeans like a pro, it’s hard to believe that Emma feels more at home designing clothes than modelling them: “My outfits tend to be influenced by blogs, street style, and people I follow on Instagram. Today was no exception”, explains the blonde beauty when we enquire about her #OOTD. “In the winter I would say my personal style is pretty casual, mixing denim with athleisure looks.”

“In the summer I tend to go the complete opposite and wear cute head-to-toe prints, lace tops, and pretty bomber jackets.” We don’t know about you, but with personal style like Emma’s, we’re happy to have this lady designing our clothes!

So, what does a day in the life of Miss Emma consist of? We asked what a typical day was like: “There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ day! Every day is different, but generally involves trend-researching, building the collection with buyers, designing the collection, and trying to push exciting new product.” Sounds like fun, huh? We wonder how she got into her line of work. “I knew I wanted to be a designer, ever since I was a kid. I went from drawing doodles of pretty dresses in sketchbooks on my bedroom floor, to studying fashion at school and then at university.”

“I also did a lot of interning in London and New York, at both high-end and high street level, where I met some incredibly talented designers along the way.” Ah ha! The longstanding tug of war between qualifications and experience can finally end on neutral ground: just do both. So, with an amazing background behind her, Emma is well and truly set for the role. We were keen to know what bit she likes best: “My favourite part of the job is the fact that I get to travel and be creative for a living.”

Her own hard-work and determination aside, we wondered what pearls of wisdom she’s gathered from industry folk: “The best pieces of advice I've been given is to work extremely hard, always be pro-active and enthusiastic, and try to get along with everyone – the industry is smaller than you think!” And what would she say to aspiring designers? “Be prepared for hard work and long hours, it's not all as glamorous as you think! Having said that, if you love what you do as much as me, it’s a lot of fun too!”

And finally, as a gal in the know, we were desperate to know which spring/summer 16 trends she’s calling out: “I’m really excited about our Rio Beat trend for high summer, the bold bright colours and exotic prints are just what we all need for our summer holidays!” Bright colours and exotic prints! That sounds divine right about now, bring on summer!
