The ReMark Knit

The Re:Mark:Editor's Knitmas Picks

Written by Jayne Bibby

Being Scottish the art of wrapping up each winter is something I’ve grown up with to survive those bitterly cold months in the Highlands. I’ve always admired people who are able to make a statement in their winter knit without losing their fashion cool – it’s not as easy as it sounds. I mean who doesn’t enjoy an oversized knit or longer-line cardigan at this stage in the season? But it’s how you wear it that counts.

The ReMark Knit

Knitwear is no longer a casual afterthought, it’s become a fashion main player. In the Primark office, there has been a definite increase in layering love within my team as we slowly start to sleigh ride towards Christmas. So if you too love a bit of a knit and are looking to update your woollen look this winter, here are some tips to up your style stakes.

With the oversized cardigan being a key item for menswear, after it dominated the A/W 16 catwalks, the coatigan is definitely on the rise – feel free to leave your coat at home lads - however that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be layering. In fact, the fine gauge roll-neck is having a bit of a fashion moment (again) and is the perfect partner to be worn under a classic crew neck or a chunky ribbed V-neck and should definitely be on your boyfriend’s Christmas wish list.

He might not know that he needs it yet but he soon will, I promise. Plus it means you can borrow it too - win win!

If you solemnly swear to only wear novelty jumpers on Christmas Jumper Day, but still want a nod to the festive season then Fairisle is the one for you. The Scandi inspired style adds just enough festive cheer without making you feel as decorated as the tree. Or if you like to sparkle your way through the season this is the perfect time for you to wear lurex threads during the day and all over embellishment.

But enough of the trend talk. To get well and truly in the festive spirit allow myself and the Primark Editors to take you through our hot (warm and fuzzy really) picks for knitwear chic.

"My love for Scandi design runs from my wardrobe all the way to my interiors so Fairisle is the obvious choice for me. These cool creams and oatmeal hues keep this knit looking sophisticated, while the animal intarsia offers a wink to novelty – the perfect mix for the festive season. I’ll be wearing my oversized knit with every girl’s best friend - distressed boyfriend jeans and heeled boots in shade of the season - plum! After all, if you can’t wear polar bears at Christmas, when can you?"

"As an ardent fan of the dark side, it’s no surprise I’m all about our black Christmas knit, this season. We all feel the peer pressure when it comes to Christmas Jumper Day, and if I must embrace the festive spirit and put my Scrooge ways aside for just one day, I’d at least like to keep things as true to my personal style as possible. I’ll be pairing our sequin slogan, chunky knit with a white shirt, leather mini or black skinnies, and ankle boots. The sequins on the front transform from a ‘let it snow’ slogan, to a very simple snowflake motif, which means I can subtly venture down the novelty route, without having to look like a human Christmas tree!"

"Winter is the perfect time to invest in knitwear and I do love a bit of Fairisle as its seasonal, yet not over the top. Regardless of the dos and don’ts from rule setters and naysayers, my choice of festive of jumper doesn’t have to be kept for the last month of the year. It can be restyled and worn throughout the winter period, a trusted companion to help combat the cold! I’d wear it with a flannel checked shirt, as I always like to add a smart element, a pair of rip-and-repair light washed jeans and finish the look off with a pair of winter boots. A smart casual festive look that combats the cold in style while spreading a bit of festive cheer!'

And there we have our merry little knitmas all wrapped up! See you next week.
