The Re:Mark: Getting Too Comfy?
At a recent breakfast meeting with the lovely Apphia Michael, a London-based stylist, writer, and former Online Fashion Editor at Wallpaper*, she reminded me how important it is to stay true to your own creative ambitions, always keep pushing yourself forward and stepping out of your comfort zone on a regular basis. It really got me thinking. Apphia’s never been one to shy away from new projects and she always has new opportunities coming her way – so there must be something in it. It really was (breakfast) food for thought!
When it comes to achieving your goals we all assume that once we get that dream job, buy your dream flat, or get that promotion everything will fall into place and you’ll feel satisfied. But it doesn’t really work like that, does it? It’s human nature to want more, although our good friend ‘the comfort zone’ tends to get in the way of that from time to time. It’s so relaxed and easy there, why would you want to leave?
Truth is, we’re often too scared of what might lie ahead when it comes to trying something new or pushing ourselves into the unknown. The longer that you wait, and procrastinate, the more ‘comfortable’ you’re going to get.
But if you take a look around, it’s the people who are trying new things, putting their name forward for challenges, taking up new hobbies and meeting new people that are going the furthest in their career. Want a piece of that sweet success pie? Then it’s time to take a leap of faith out of your comfort zone.
And what better way is there to step out of your comfort zone than in a new pair of career conquering shoes. Yes indeed, these summer staples were made for walking, talking and smashing your goals – all in one.
Apphia has had an amazing career already, before making the decision to go freelance. You would think that she has already conquered all of her career goals, but far from it and at our meet up she commented ‘I have nothing to lose’ when it comes to all new creative projects, and those are words to live by! (You might even remember Apphia from our Minimalist Mono feature).
The say good things come to those who take risks, and taking yourself out of your comfort zone every once in a while is the best thing you can do.
And while we’re talking about trying new things, have you tried non-touring yet? Not heard of it? Allow our beauty assistant Freya to at talk you through the ‘no make-up, make-up’ trend taking the industry by storm.
We’ve all read the memes and seen the inspirational quotes, but have you ever acted on it? So your homework for next week is simple; Do something today that makes you feel uncomfortable. Go on, I dare you!
