The Re:Mark: Back To the Future
Why is it that looking back on your childhood feels so comforting? From your childhood friends, favourite bands and tv shows, down to the posters that hung in your school locker and the colour you painted your bedroom walls. In a fashion age that craves a ‘see now, buy now’ mentality, and has a ‘more is more’ mindset, could it be that’s it all gotten a bit too much and we’re retreating back into our comfort zones until it’s all over? Enter nostalgia; a new fashion movement in its own right.
With Netflix sensation ‘Stranger Things’ being pipped as the most successful original series yet, I think it’s the trip down memory lane that has everyone yearning for more. With nods to the 80s, numerous pop cultural references throughout, and fashion statements of the day a-plenty (did you see the mom jeans?) it’s easy to see how we’ve managed to get sucked in.
Trend forecasters will tell you that it’s all the youth of today’s fault – yup, us basically! Gen X can’t take it anymore and are taking comfort from their childhoods, with the millennials in particular looking back further than any other generation. As computer games, polaroid pictures, and vinyl sales sees a resurgence, it’s easy to see why rock band tees, for both guys and gals, are also having a fashion moment.
From the Rolling Stones to Nirvana, and Def Leppard to AC/DC – who says you need to be a long haired rocker to get involved with this key item of the season? But do the frontman followers wearing these tees actually listen to any of the band’s music, and have they even heard of the artist aside from that 1980s power ballad playlist on Spotify? Does it matter?
Nope, not when they look this good with jeans, denim cut offs and leather biker jackets. After all fashion is meant to be fun, no?
But the retro references don’t end there. Our menswear collection takes athleisure styling up a notch this week and revisits the late 80s and early 90s rave culture, with colour blocked T-shirts, track tops and bucket hats worn back with everyday wardrobe staple, as this look is reinvented by a new modern day customer.
And if its memories of retreating to your adolescent bedroom haven that have you reminiscing why not go all total retro recall on us and get down with the Honeys – I’m talking about Winnie the Pooh of course and a proper Disney flash back – I don’t care what the haters say, the Disney chronicles will be forever cool in my book.
If all else fails, nothing says modern day vintage better than a classic eyeliner flick and the perfect red lip pout, finally, all those years of trying on mum’s red lippie has paid off. Not sure she would agree though.
Now just to get Primark working on those hover boards…..
