The Re:Mark: 100% My Type On Paper

Notebooks, pens, highlighters, Post-It notes, folders, staplers, paper clips, scissors, you name it, I’ve got it on my desk. But truth be told, I do most of my creative writing on my phone, so why is it that I’m still completely obsessed and can’t walk past a stationery shop without going in? What is it about stationery that has us all lusting after a new notebook season after season? Forget about Love Island, THIS is 100% My Type On Paper!

THE REMARK PRIMARK

Stationery takes me right back to school days when the start of a new term meant brand new shoes, a new school bag, and most importantly a new notebook. It was something that was mine and not school property, I could write in it and graffiti the front cover as much as I liked without getting into trouble. Plus I could doodle love hearts dedicated to my latest crush while I yawned my way through math class.

Fast forward to today and I still love the process of choosing a new notebook and deciding what I’m going to use it for. There’s a huge sense of nostalgia attached to it and although some of us obsess love it more than others, I’m hard pressed to find someone who hates stationery.

Despite spending all day looking at a screen and writing in a Word doc, I still prefer to take a pen and paper into all my meetings. I think it’s that feeling of being organised that I like; taking notes and planning my schedule on paper to give me a ready-made map of the week ahead. And the to-do lists – oh let’s not forget about the love of making a to-do list! I still get a thrill out of scoring things off my list at the end of the day – Every. Single. Time! Who’s with me?

However, out with the work place you’ll find me making all of my shopping lists on my phone, I even write my column on my phone when I’m on the train in the morning as I worry that a spark of inspiration might leave me if I don’t write it on there and then.

There have been so many times that I’ve thought of a great feature/ column/ chapter idea and assured myself I’d never forget it because it’s just SO good. Then an hour later I’m kicking myself because I’ve completely forgotten it! My phone is always on me so I really have no excuse.

Much like carrying a magazine in your hand and lovingly flicking though its pages, there’s the same emotional connection to hugging a notepad to your chest en route to a meeting. We might be living in a digital era but there is certainly still space for a tactile touch. And I’m sure I’m not the only one to have one personalised with my initials – the adult version of writing your name in Tipp-Ex on your school pencil case fyi. Thankfully we’ve moved on!

I’m not sure that writing notes on a tablet ever really took off, I definitely know taking pictures with one didn’t, anyone who’s sat behind a tablet picture taker at fashion week will know why, but the smart phone’s different. Easy to hold, always in your bag or pocket and allows you to multi task as you take notes while listening to music, all the time being able to answer calls and send texts too. A crazy city dweller’s dream and a near necessity to life. Luckily you can also use it to listen to a mediation app at the end of the day. Namaste.

There is definitely something romantic about putting pen to paper and writing down your inner most thoughts whether it’s for a daily journal, creative brainstorming or simply a travel itinerary planner. You’re not just organising your life in a notebook but you’re confiding in it too.

One thing that will certainly never get old is that feeling you get when someone gives you a hand written note or sends you a letter in the post – you know they took the time to write it especially for you – it means a lot more than Facebook message or a text. Is that back-to-school feeling we all enjoy just us longing for control and independence? Maybe and I’ll take it. I might be a control freak but I’ll be doing it with an oh-so-chic personalised notebook and a fabulous pen, probably!
