The Re:Mark: Wanna Follow Suit?
First we had the pink suit phenomenon, then it was the grey and white checked blazer, and now the high street is awash with trousers suits for the girls. Always dubbed as ‘power dressing’ I wondered if there was something in it. Do you actually feel any different just because of your sartorial stance? I decided to find out.
The catwalks were inundated with tailoring for SS17 and now the high streets are following suit (’scuse the pun). On the runways it was the bold brights and daring prints that caught my eye and the retailers are showing no signs of holding back when it comes to translating these designer looks to their high street consumer. I’m not one to wear my Sunday Best to work every day, but I also have a constant internal battle with myself about how I can dress smarter for work while staying on trend, and also feeling comfortable.
With the lines between office and daywear becoming ever more blurred, the art of dressing up for work (especially within the creative industry) has long gone. However, there are just some day when casual just won’t cut it!
I decided to see what all the fuss was about and invested in a grey, double breasted blazer complete with shoulder pads, albeit not the same ones from the 80s. My first impressions? I LOVED it! The look was smart yet flattering, the blazer nipped in at the waist, had a strong shoulder and a very flattering longer-line silhouette.
The best bit though was that it looked just as good with my ripped boyfriend jeans and loafers as it did with smart skinny trousers and heels. Worn buttoned (top button only with DB fastenings though, button both fastenings and say goodbye to your fashion cred!) the look was finished and smart, but worn open and a casual stance followed.
And do you know what? I felt different too. Smart, in control and able to face the day. There really is something in this power dressing concept after all.
So what about you? What’s your personal ammunition? Maybe you feel at your best when your make-up is on point, or a bold matte lip is your go-to to feel like a true girl boss (they say women who wear a bold lip go further in their career, just fyi), or maybe you like to be the first to try the latest make-up trend, fancy feeling Mermazing?
If you’d rather wear your fave skinny jeans to the office everyday but choose to show your mood though your footwear, allow me to point you in the right direction. We have summer shoes to get you through every work-related occasion; strategy meetings, working lunches and landing that promotion!
But if I haven’t managed to convince you yet, I urge you to try on a attitude empowering blazer, after all the days of tailoring meaning dull, drab, black and navy are long gone. Colour and floral prints are leading the way this season and a new longer-line shape and deep V-fronted blazers make this look all the easier to wear.
