Difference Between Babygrows And Sleepsuits
Our babygrow and sleepsuit guide gives you the lowdown on newborn naptime 'fits.
What is a babygrow?
A babygrow is a one-piece garment designed for infants and young babies, suitable for both daytime and nighttime wear. Made from soft, comfortable fabric, it features a roomy envelope neckline for easy dressing and popper or zip fastenings for quick outfit and nappy changes. Hurrah! Our babygrows are made from cotton which is a recommended fabric to choose for newborns as it will not irritate their sensitive skin. It also helps to regulate your baby’s fluctuating temperature, as it is much more breathable compared to other fabrics. We have a selection of babygrows with covered feet and padding on the soles for when your baby is ready to crawl, so their tootsies are given protection from the floor.
Premature Babygrows
Specifically designed for babies who are 3lbs, 4lbs and 5lbs, our premature baby range includes babygrows with flats seams for extra comfort, soft self-fastening closures and the ability to open flat for easy changes.
What is the difference between sleepsuits and babygrows?
Sleepsuit and babygrow are terms used interchangeably, as they’re essentially the same thing. However, a sleepsuit usually has enclosed toes and therefore the outfit your baby will be most likely to sleep in. Baby sleepsuits with mittens are an option to cover their hands when out and about in the colder months. It is a good idea to have both footless and covered foot options for changes in seasons and environments.
Types of babygrows & sleepsuits
Babygrows with zips
Babies look cute whatever they wear, but if you want to make your life easier (when half asleep), a zip-up babygrow makes changing them much easier. And it looks adorable. The zip being at the front rather than at the back (like adult clothing) means you don’t need to turn them over when they’re on their mat. This makes putting on their nappy a simpler task. Winning! We have lots of zipper babygrows in different textures and animal prints starting from newborn sizes to 12-18 month babygrows and 3-6 month babygrows. Trust us, you’ll go gaga over them!
Sleepsuit with zipper
A sleepsuit with a zipper is a practical design and is not just a feature seen on cotton styles but is also seen on fleecy sleepsuits. Usually found on the middle of the garment, it goes across the length of the baby so if they’ve had a messy mealtime, their guests will never know! You’ll be able to get them in and out of one of our sleepsuits for newborns in the time it takes them to gurgle. Their aunts, grandparents and other guests will find them presentable and in cuddle time condition.
Sleepsuits with mittens
Another feature new parents will rejoice in is the sleepsuit with mittens. This protects babies from either scratching themselves or you with their nails (which can be sharp). The sleepsuits with mittens will also have covered feet which will stop your baby’s hands and toes from getting cold when you take them out in the pram.
Footless sleepsuits
A footless sleepsuit is a one-piece garment designed for infants and toddlers that covers the body from the neck to the ankles, leaving the feet uncovered. In the summer, those little feet will get hot, so it is recommended you choose baby footless sleepsuits. Just like the covered kind, they come in zipper, button-down or popper fastening options.
Zips vs popper sleepsuits
Zips or poppers I hear you cry. Your baby probably won’t have a preference at this stage, so let’s talk through both styles of babygrow so you can make the decision for them. Babygrows with zips usually start from the neckline, across the body and end at the leg. Popper fastening options also open at the neck and then go down the seams of both legs. It is up to you on which you decide to put your tot in, as both are easy for them to wear. It is likely you may have a mixture of both types as you’ll need a lot on hand, and for that reason there are babygrow multipacks.
FAQ’S
What is the difference between bodysuits and sleepsuits?
There’s a clear difference between bodysuit and sleepsuit, but not between a sleepsuit and babygrow. Bodysuits are like a cousin in the family of babywear, with popper fastenings and no coverings on the legs. Sleepsuits and babygrows are siblings or non-identical twins, with sleepsuits having coverings on your baby’s feet or hands.
How many sleepsuits does a newborn need?
As babies spend much of the time sleeping, it is best to ensure you have plenty of sleepsuits to change them into for their naptime after feeding, bathtime and burp time! It is recommended you have around six to eight on rotation each day. Older babies or toddlers may not need as many changes due to them getting into more of a routine and waking up less in the night.
How many babygrows do I need?
It is always good to have a few babygrows on hand, as newborns temperature changes and it is likely you’ll be changing their sleepsuit or babygrow at least three times a day. It is recommended you have around six to eight babygrows, and we have babygrow multipacks in two and three pack options. They’re easy to wash as they can go into your machine and our babygrows are suitable for tumble drying and ironing.
