Don’t lose sleep over choosing your duvet! Our guide will help you feel more relaxed about the sizes and dimensions of standard duvets and their covers. UK duvet sizes are split into four categories, with single being the smallest, then a double, followed by a king and super king. The sizes of a duvet should match your mattress to ensure it covers the entire bed for a comfortable night’s sleep.

What are duvets?

Put simply, a duvet is a type of ‘quilted blanket’. They are typically filled with materials such as down, feathers, or synthetic fibres, designed to trap heat and create a cosy sleeping environment. Duvets come in various thicknesses, often referred to as a tog, designed to be used inside a removable duvet cover to keep you warm throughout the night.

Find out more about duvet tog sizes in our helpful guide.

Duvet size chart

  • Cot Bed: 120cm X 150cm (or 47 x 59 inches)

  • Single Duvet: 135cm X 200cm (or 53 x 78 inches)

  • Double Duvet: 200cm X 200cm (or 79 x 79 inches)

  • King Duvet: 225cm X 22ocm (or 91 x 87 inches)

  • Super King Duvet: 260cm X 220cm (or102 x 87 inches)

What size for a cot bed?

For small children, there is a cot bed which is smaller than an adult single, and these duvets usually measure 120cm x 150cm (or 47 x 59 inches). A cot size duvet is only suitable for little ones who are above a year old, and they should not be used for a newborn’s bedding.

What size is a single duvet?

A single duvet measures 135cm x 200cm (or 53 x 78 inches). It's the ideal size for one person, making it the perfect companion for a single bed. However, if you’re sharing a double bed and have had enough of the nighttime ‘tug-of-war’ over the covers, a single duvet might just save your sleep (and your relationship). Many couples opt for separate single duvets to avoid that relentless battle for warmth. After all, there’s nothing wrong with keeping the peace while keeping yourself snug under your very own quilt!

What size is a double duvet?

Double duvet dimensions are 200cm x 200cm (or 79 x 79 inches) which isn’t quite two singles put together, but it is big enough to fit two people. This size is perfect for cosy couples or anyone who likes to spread out just a little more than a single duvet allows. If you have a queen, the size of a double duvet will also work for this bed. A queen is bigger than a single, but smaller than a double (120cm x 190 cm), and they are usually found in student accommodation.

What size is a king duvet?

Actual kings come in different sizes, but a King size duvet dimension is 225cm x 220cm (or 91 x 87 inches). This generous size is perfect for those who want extra comfort and space, making it ideal for couples or individuals who love to spread out. A king duvet not only ensures full coverage but also helps prevent nighttime drafts.

What size is a super king?

There’s a duvet bigger than king, called super king. The super king duvet size measures at 260cm x 220cm (or 102 x 87 inches). Super king duvets are the biggest standard UK duvet sizes, known for their generous space and size, making them the ideal duvet for taller individuals. Due to its size, you can decorate it with extra cushions and blankets. If you’re buying different size covers but you want them to be the uniform, we have the same patterns available in all duvet sizes.

How do you know what size duvet to get?

Choosing the right duvet size comes down to your bed dimensions and your sleeping preferences. First, consider your bed size — duvets typically come in standard sizes like single, double, king, and super king to correspond with bed sizes. If you like a snug fit, choose a duvet that matches the size of your bed. If you prefer extra coverage (or avoiding tug-of-wars with your sleeping partner), you might opt for the next size up.

Aesthetically, if you want your duvet to drape over the sides for a more luxurious feel, size up accordingly. Checking your bed’s measurements and thinking about your comfort needs will help you pick the perfect duvet size for a restful night’s sleep.

Are duvet sizes different in Europe and other countries?

Yes, they are, the European standard is larger than UK. The main size ranges they have are single, double and king sizes, so you’ll need to be aware of the differences if your bed or duvet is from a European manufacturer.

Should my duvet correspond to my mattress size?

This is up to you, as a duvet with the same mattress size will provide adequate bedding. You might want to invest in a larger duvet if you like the overhang look or you want extra duvet coverage.

Is it a good idea to put a larger duvet into a smaller cover, or vice versa?

We advise you to pair your duvet with its corresponding size cover, so a single bed duvet size would need a single duvet cover. The same guidelines apply to double, king and super king. If you put a larger duvet into a smaller cover it’ll bulk up, or if you put a small duvet into a large cover there will be lots of space.

Can I machine wash a duvet?

Yes, you can machine wash a duvet, but you’ll need to check the care label for the washing instructions, as they vary depending on the brand. It is recommended you wash your duvet every few months. Also, the tog can carry weight here (get it?!) so if you want to clean a winter tog of 13, it’s a good idea to take it to the local laundrette, as it could be too thick for your household machine.
