Caring for your candles

Our candles and diffusers are designed to give you hours of indulgent fragrances. They make pretty great decorative pieces, too. But burning them correctly is the key to making them last longer and look their best. Read on for instructions and great hacks...

How To Burn Your Candle

*Trim the wick as needed. As your candle burns lower, use a wick trimmer to cut your wick to a safe length: it prevents sooting and keeps your candle burning at its best. We recommend trimming to around 5mm (1/10 of an inch).

  • Say no to tunnelling. Tunneling is when your candle burns down the center only, meaning the wax around the edges goes to waste. An easy way to prevent this: make sure your candle burns to the edges the first time you use it.

  • Leave a little at the end. You should never let your candle burn right to the bottom: it can cause wax leakage or even glass breakage (eek!). We advise leaving at least 6mm (again, about 1/10 of an inch) of wax at the bottom of every candle.

Candle Safety

*Give your candles space. While a group of candles makes a gorgeous decorative display, it’s important to keep candles apart when they’re burning. It stops them overheating. You should keep your candles away from other sources of heat too, like radiators.

  • Keep your candles away from drafts and air vents to reduce the chance of the flame catching and lighting anything nearby. Breezes can also cause candles to produce a lot of soot, which can leave a black residue on walls and ceilings.

  • Keep an eye on your candles: they should never be left unattended and should always be kept away from children, pets and flammable materials.

  • Your candles should always be upright and placed on a stable, even and heatproof surface. Add extra protection to tables, shelves and windowsills to ensure your candles don’t damage them.

  • Try using a candle snuffer to extinguish the candle. It helps prevent smoking and wax escaping.

Reed Diffuser Hacks

*Get a fragrance boost by flipping the reeds from time to time. Flipping the reeds increases the fragrance intensity but also causes quicker evaporation of the product, so you might need a refill sooner if flipping too frequently.

*The more reeds you use, the more intense the fragrance will be. Fragrance oil is distributed by traveling up the reeds and evaporating. Find the fragrance too intense? Try using fewer reeds; it should make your diffuser last a little longer, too. Love a strong fragrance? Use all the reeds included and flip them regularly.

  • Diffuser liquid is designed to evaporate quickly in order to diffuse the fragrance throughout the room. This means the liquid can be harsh on surfaces like paint, varnishes and plastic (as with most diffusers on the market). Take extra care to protect your surfaces when opening or moving your diffuser and rotating the reeds, and place them on a protective surface like a coaster or tray.

*Safety first! Keep your diffuser out of reach of children and pets. Diffuser liquid can be flammable, so don’t place your diffuser too close to candles or open flames.
