Duvet Size Guide
When it comes to duvets and their covers, it’s the size that counts. We’ll tell you how yours measures up.
Don’t lose sleep over choosing your duvet... Our guide will help you relax about the sizes and dimensions of standard duvets and their covers. Duvet sizes are split into four categories: a twin or single is the smallest, followed by a double, queen and king. The size of a duvet should match your mattress so it covers the entire bed for a comfortable night’s sleep.
What are duvets?
Put simply, a duvet is a kind of quilted blanket. Usually filled with materials like down, feathers, or synthetic fibers, they're designed to trap heat for snug sleeping. Duvets come in various thicknesses, referred to as a "tog", and are designed to go inside a removable duvet cover to keep you warm through the night.

What size for a toddler bed?
A toddler bed is smaller than an adult single; these duvets usually measure 47 x 59 inches. A toddler duvet is only safe for little ones older than a year — they should absolutely not be used for newborn bedding.
What size is a single duvet?
A twin, or single duvet, measures 53 x 78 inches (135 x 200 cm). It's just the right size for one person, perfect for a twin or dorm bed. Sharing a double and had enough of the duvet tug-of-war? Two singles might just save your sleep (and your relationship). It's popular in some European countries for couples to go for separate single duvets to avoid that battle. There’s nothing wrong with keeping the peace while keeping yourself snug under your very own...
What size is a double duvet?
Double duvet dimensions are 79 x 79 inches (200 x 200 cm): not quite two singles put together, but big enough to fit two people. This size is perfect for snuggly couples or anyone who likes to spread out a little bit more than with a single. If you have a queen sized bed, a double duvet will work with it too. A queen is bigger than a double: 47 x 74 inches (120 x 190 cm).
What size is a king duvet?
A king size duvet dimension is 91 x 87 inches (225cm x 220 cm). This generous size is great when you want extra comfort and space, so it's perfect for couples or people who love to spread out. A king duvet not only gives you full coverage, it also helps prevent nighttime drafts.
What size is a super king?
There’s a duvet bigger than king: the California king. The California king duvet size measures 102 x 87 inches (260cm x 220 cm). California kings are the biggest standard duvet sizes. Known for their generous space and size, they're perfect for taller people. Due to its size, you can decorate it with extra cushions and blankets. How do you know what size duvet to get?
Finding the right duvet size is about your bed dimensions and sleeping preferences. First, consider your bed size — duvets usually come in standard sizes like single, double, king, and super king to correspond with bed sizes. Like a snug fit? Pick a duvet that matches the size of your bed. All about extra coverage (or avoiding tug-of-war with your sleeping partner)? Think about going with the next size up.
If you want your duvet to drape over the sides for a more luxe feel, size up accordingly. Checking your bed’s measurements and thinking about your comfort needs will help you pick the perfect duvet size for a restful night’s sleep.
Are duvet sizes different in Europe and other countries?
Yes they are: most European sizes larger than US ones. The main sizes they have are single, double and king, so you’ll need to be aware of the differences if your bed or duvet is from a European manufacturer.
Should my duvet match my mattress size?
It's up to you: a duvet with the same mattress size will provide enough bedding. You might want to invest in a larger duvet if you like the overhang look or you want extra duvet coverage.
Is it a good idea to put a larger duvet into a smaller cover, or vice versa?
We suggest you pair your duvet with its correct size cover, so a single bed duvet size would need a single duvet cover. The same guidelines apply to double, king and super king. If you put a larger duvet into a smaller cover it’ll bulk up, or if you put a small duvet into a large cover there will be lots of space.
Can I machine wash a duvet?
Yes, you can machine wash a duvet, but you’ll need to check the care label for the instructions: they vary between brands. It's recommended you wash your duvet every few months. Also, the tog can carry weight here (get it...?). If you want to clean a winter tog of 13, it’s a good idea to take it to the cleaners: it could be too thick for your home washer.
