Standard Suitcase Sizes

What are the three luggage sizes?

There are three suitcase sizes to choose from: small, medium, and large. Each size has its own perks, depending on the length of your trip and how much clothing you're packing.

Size Guide

Small Suitcases

Minimalist packer? Just going away for a couple of days? Small suitcases are the way to go: A small cabin bag or hand luggage usually measures around 45 x 32 x 18cm. A large cabin bag is considered a small travel suitcase, which has slightly bigger dimensions: it usually measures around 54 x 34 x 20 cm or more and can fit in the plane's overhead compartment. Small suitcases on wheels are perfect for carrying on board, so you’ll be ready to hit the ground running with all your essentials in hand when you land. It’s important to note that the specific measurements and weight restrictions for small suitcases can vary by airline, so make sure to check your airline's baggage policy before you travel. Our pro hack: Need to pack in a flash, but don’t have a lot of space? Use packing cubes or vacuum bags to fit all your essentials in your small luggage.

Medium Suitcases

Planning a long weekend getaway? Week-long vacay? A medium suitcase is a great pick. You’ll be able to pack all your fave vacay looks, shoes, and skincare essentials without worrying about space. A medium suitcase usually measures around 67x45.5x26 or slightly bigger: spacious enough to fit all your essentials without being too bulky. Just remember, medium-sized suitcases are classified as checked baggage size and can't come on board with you. So once you've checked in your trusty suitcase, you can enjoy the duty-free airport shopping without having to worry about lugging your suitcase behind. Our pro hack: to pack smart, use the rule of three: pick three types of shoes, tops, bottoms, and summer dresses you can combine to make different looks.

Large Suitcase

Going on a family vacay or a long trip? Don't sweat it: A large suitcase has your back. These babies are perfect if you always over pack or love to bring a ton of outfits and accessories for the trip. Usually measuring 77 x 52.5 x 29cm or larger, you'll have enough space for everything: from countless look to your sunscreen. A 20kg suitcase is usually considered large luggage. Just keep in mind that most airlines consider large suitcases as checked baggage, so make sure to check with your airline before packing. Our pro hack: When packing large suitcases, it’s easy to get carried away. But watch out! If it's over 23kg, you may be charged extra by your airline. Always check the weight limit for checked baggage. And remember: you’ll probably want to bring back souvenirs, so never pack your suitcase full to start with.

What Type of Luggage Should I Buy?

Now you know the different suitcase sizes, it's time to figure out what types of suitcases/luggage you should buy. Should you go for soft or hard-shell? Let's break it down.

Suitcase Styles

Soft Suitcases

Soft shell suitcases are great for flexibility and versatility. They're usually made of lightweight materials, making them easy to carry and pack. Soft suitcases are basically like your fave cozy hoodie: they're flexible and can expand to fit more stuff. They also tend to have more pockets and compartments for better organization. From small soft suitcases to large colorful picks, check out Primark's suitcases for your perfect soft-shell luggage.

Hard Shell Suitcases

Hard cases are like the bodyguards of the luggage world - they're tough and can protect your stuff from rough handling. Got precious face creams to shield? Count on a trusty hard shell. Plus, they look super sleek and come in lots of colors, making them a trending pick. Hard shell suitcases are also typically easier to maintain and tend to be more water resistant.

4-Wheel Suitcases

Four-wheel suitcases, also known as spinner suitcases, are the ultimate travel companions. Glide through the airport with ease with a 4-wheeled cabin suitcase: you can move it effortlessly in any direction.

Backpacks

Travel backpacks are a convenient luggage pick if you like to go hands-free. From compact daypacks to large backpacks for longer trips, they're great for outdoor activities, city exploring, and even as carry-on luggage. Our awesome collection has various backpack sizes and styles you'll love.

Weekender Bags

Weekender bags are perfect for travelers who like to pack lightly and efficiently for short trips. These cool compact bags come in various shapes and sizes, and are designed to fit everything you need for a weekend getaway. They're lightweight, easy to carry, and can fit in most overhead compartments.

From Mickey Mouse designs to bright color picks, kids' suitcases are adorable and durable enough to travel with. We even have super-cool kids’ backpacks, featuring their fave characters.

Luggage Features

Now it's time to unpack all the luggage features to look for:

Suitcases with Locks

Traveling with valuable items? Just want some extra security for your gear? A suitcase with lock is the way to go. These suitcases come with built-in number locks, so you can protect your valuables no matter where you are.

Suitcases with Compartments

All about organization in packing mode? Suitcases with compartments are your best friend. These suitcases come with various pockets, dividers, and sections that make it easy to pack your things; you can even find suitcases with laptop compartments.

Expandable Suitcases

Sometimes, you just need a little more space. That’s where expandable suitcases come in. These suitcases have a zipper which increases the capacity of your luggage, giving you more room to add in last-minute stuff.

Suitcase Colors

Who said suitcases should be boring? You can find a wide range of suitcase colors to go with your personal style. From classic black suitcases to bright pink and marble prints, there's a suitcase color for everyone.

Suitcase Wheels

One of the most important features of a suitcase: its wheels. Four-wheel suitcases make it easy to navigate through the airport and city streets. Two-wheel suitcases, also called roller bags, are more traditional and easier to pull behind you. Pick the type of wheels that work best for your travel style.

Suitcase Handles

Handles may seem like a minor feature, but they can make a big difference when you’re traveling. Make sure the handles are easy to grip. Look for suitcases with comfortable, sturdy handles, including a retractable handle for pulling the suitcase and a side handle for lifting.

Airline Suitcase Size Chart

Air travel can get confusing with all the different hand luggage restrictions and baggage allowances. So we’ve broken down the suitcase size restrictions of some common airlines from budget to big carriers:

Budget Airlines

Budget airlines typically have strict size restrictions for both carry-on and checked luggage. You're usually allowed to take a carry-on bag small enough to fit under your seat. For any additional checked baggage, you might get charged extra. It's important to remember that airlines have different bag size requirements. So, a Southwest cabin bag won’t have the same required dimensions as a JetBlue carry-on size, etc.

Here are some budget airline luggage size restrictions*, updated as of 2023. Please always consult your airline’s page for the latest restrictions.
