Newborn: Up to 8 lbs (3.6 kg) and 21.5 inches (54 cm)
0-3 months: 8-12.5 lbs (3.6-5.7 kg) and 21.5-24 inches (54-61 cm)
3-6 months: 12.5-17 lbs (5.7-7.7 kg) and 24-27 inches (61-69 cm)
6-9 months: 17-21 lbs (7.7-9.5 kg) and 27-28.5 inches (69-72 cm)
9-12 months: 21-25 lbs (9.5-11.3 kg) and 28.5-30.5 inches (72-78 cm)
12-18 months: 25-28 lbs (11.3-12.7 kg) and 30.5-32.5 inches (78-83 cm)
18-24 months: 28-30 lbs (12.7-13.6 kg) and 32.5-34 inches (83-86 cm)
You should always consider brand variations, your baby’s rate of growth, the style of clothing and how their nappy will fit under garments. If in doubt, refer to a brand’s size chart to accurately translate measurements to real-life dressing!

What size is a preemie?
Preemies (or premature babies) are typically between 3 and 5 pounds at birth. This can vary depending on when the child is born in the pregnancy cycle, as shorter-term babies tend to be smaller in size. In this case, we’d recommend looking out for premature-specific clothing.
What size is a newborn?
The age range for newborns typically runs from birth to three months, or up to 8 pounds in weight. As such, you can expect the average baby to fall within this age or weight guidelines.
How to take measurements for baby’s clothing
Length: Lay your baby down on a flat surface. Use a measuring tape and measure from the top of their head to the floor to figure out their height measurement. Use a baby scale to measure your child’s weight. A useful tip would be to measure yourself on scales. You could then measure yourself again holding your baby. Subtract the weight difference to find your tiny tot's weight.
Arm: Measure from the collar of the shoulder through to the wrist to work out their arm length.
Leg: Measure from the outside of the leg to the ankle for their leg length. Stick to either inches or centimetres while measuring. This way, you'll get spot-on numbers that match up with the sizing chart!
How many baby clothes do I need?
How many items of baby clothing you’ll need often depends on how much washing you plan to do. You'll want to have on hand to consider 8 to 10 baby sleepsuits to cover a newborn for 3 to 5 days, factoring in daily outfit changes due to spit-ups and spills. Other essential garments you might want to have on hand for babies and toddlers include:
Bodysuit multipacks
Outfits e.g. tops and bottoms, all-in-ones and dress sets from our newborn sets
Socks or baby booties
Jumpers and cardigans
Pramsuits
Hats
How do I know when my baby needs to size up clothes?
A sign that your little one has outgrown their clothes is when they appear too small, snug in the width and short in overall body length. Other signs include:
Difficulty fastening: When popper buttons won’t stay securely snapped, this indicates your tiny treasure has outgrown their current size.
Marks on their skin: If you notice any red marks on their skin where their clothing has been, it’s usually a sign that it’s time to size up.
How to make my baby clothes last longer?
With how quickly babies grow at early stages, you might also be wondering how to affordably prolong the life of your little love’s clothes. Here’s a few tips that may help:
Size up so that your little one will have more wear in their clothing before they grow out of it.
Try folding leg cuffs down (or up, if you sized bigger) to adjust the fit of bottoms.
Buy pieces with adjustable fastenings. Many options in our product selection have multiple rows of fastenings that can accommodate your baby's growth.
