How Does Period Underwear Work

Our clever period underwear is made up of four layers of protection. The first layer quickly wicks away moisture, fights bacteria and stops smells so that you always feel dry and fresh. Then, an absorbent secondary layer will soak up fluid and lock it away. The third layer gives you extra waterproof protection to help prevent any pesky leaks and finally there's a fourth layer of super soft fabric for ultimate comfort.

Caring For Your Period Underwear

Keeping your period underwear at its best is simple. Rinse with cold water after every wear until the water runs clear and then machine wash. Forget the fabric conditioner as this can reduce the fabric’s hardworking functions. Once done, hang dry and they’ll be ready to reuse in no time.

Our Period Underwear FAQ

1.What is Primark’s period underwear range?

  • Our new period underwear is a collection of underwear which is designed to be comfortable, affordable and accessible for all. Our range has been meticulously designed produced to ensure effective absorption, reduce the smell of any odours and to be easily washed and reused. Our light to medium flow period underwear can hold up to three regular tampons worth of liquid (18ml) while our medium to heavy flow period underwear can hold up to four regular tampons worth (24ml). Our period underwear is designed to help manage your period flow. They can be used as extra protection with sanitary products for overnight use

2. Are period underwear hygienic, free of chemicals and do they have odour control?

  • The materials we use have been developed to be safe and effective for our customers. Our product is rigorously tested for chemicals under the REACH requirements. The only treatments used on our products are for wicking properties and an anti-microbial finish applied to the top layer of the gusset to optimise moisture wicking for odour control and breathability. These treatments do not use nano technology or harmful toxins and are registered with the EPA (Environmental Protective Authority). The anti-microbial treatment eliminates bacteria and neutralises bad odours in the gusset which helps to maintain a hygienic freshness. If washed correctly, they will remain odour free.

3. Is there a possibility of leakage while period underwear is worn?

  • We recommend trying the period underwear for the first time at home to see how they work for your flow.

4.How do I care for my period underwear and how long do they last?

  • To make your reusable period underwear last, you should rinse in cold water after use until the water runs clear – don’t soak. The most important thing is to make sure the period underwear doesn’t dry out after wearing. Then wash at 30 degrees without fabric softener as this reduces the fabric’s function. Hang dry, reuse, repeat. If the period underwear is cared for as instructed there is no reason why it should last as long as your regular underwear.

5.Can the period underwear be worn with other sanitary products?

  • While our period underwear brief is designed to replace tampons, cups and pads, it may also be worn with these products for extra protection depending on your flow. We recommend trying the period underwear for the first time at home to see how they work for your flow.

6.What are they made from?

  • Our collection has been meticulously designed with a range of materials including cotton, and polyester, to ensure effective absorption, reduce the smell of any odours and to be easily washed and reused. See care label for further information.

7. How do they work?

  • The gusset is the absorbent part of the period underwear, which is made up of three or four layers depending on which period underwear is selected. The top layer of the gusset draws the fluid down to the next layer where it is held, the last layer has a thin waterproof and breathable gel on the fabric which will prevent leakage. The anti-microbial treatment will prevent bacteria and neutralises bad odours in the gusset which helps to maintain hygiene and freshness.

8.What does the period underwear feel like when worn?

  • Period underwear are stretchy and soft, they look, feel and fit like regular underwear.

9.What is your returns or refund policy?

  • For hygiene reasons, all of our underwear are final sale and not eligible for refund and exchange.

10. Are these period underwear ethically made?

  • Fair pay, safety, and healthy working conditions are essential to our mission. That’s why we require all of our suppliers and the factories who make our clothing to meet internationally-recognised standards. Even though 98% of factories making our products also manufacture for other brands, we don’t take any chances or cut corners.
