How to measure yourself
Getting accurate measurements is key to finding the right fit. Follow these steps to measure yourself easily and accurately.
Tools Needed:
Tape measure: A flexible one works best.
Mirror: Helps make sure the tape is straight.
A friend (optional): For hard-to-reach areas.
How to measure:
Neck
Wrap the tape around the base of your neck, just below your Adam's apple. Make sure the tape is snug but not tight, leaving a finger’s width of space for comfort.
Chest
Stand naturally and measure the fullest part of your chest, typically just under the armpits. Keep the tape level and avoid pulling it too tight.
Waist
Measure around your waistline, just above your belly button. Wrap the tape snugly around this area, without sucking in your stomach for an accurate measurement.
Hips
Measure around the widest part of your hips and butt. Keep the tape horizontal and make sure it doesn’t dip at the back.
Inseam
Measure from the top of your inner thigh down to your ankle bone. For accuracy, wear shoes and stand straight, or ask a friend to help.
Sleeve length
Start at the point where your shoulder meets your arm. Run the tape down your arm, over the elbow, and to the wrist bone. Keep your arm slightly bent for precision.

Hacks for accurate measurements
Avoid measuring over thick clothing; wear a fitted shirt or measure directly on the skin.
Don’t pull the tape too tightly or leave it too loose—it should rest comfortably against your body.
Stand upright and relaxed while measuring to avoid skewed results.
Double check your measurements for consistency.
FAQs
What should I do if I’m between sizes?
If your measurements fall between two sizes, consider the type of fit you prefer and how you want to wear the piece:
Order the larger size: If you want a looser fit, size up and get your clothing tailored to your exact dimensions.
Order the smaller size: For a tighter fit, size down.
Casual wear: Go for the larger size for a relaxed fit and added comfort.
Formalwear: Go for the smaller size for a tailored, snug look, but make sure there’s no restriction in movement.
Stretch clothing: Clothing with stretchy fabrics adapts to your body and allows more freedom of movement.
Balancing waist and length
- If your waist and inseam measurements don’t align with standard sizing, prioritize the waist for the best fit. Length can often be tailored.
How should men’s jeans fit in the waist and thighs?
Waist: Jeans should sit comfortably around your natural waistline without digging in or needing a belt to stay up.
Thighs: Aim for a fit that lets you bend and move freely. Slim styles should hug the thighs without feeling restrictive, while regular fits should have enough room without appearing baggy.
What if I’m between sizes in jeans?
Waist: Size up for a more relaxed feel, or if you plan to tuck in shirts. Size down if the fabric has stretch or you prefer a snugger fit.
Length: If the inseam is slightly too long, cuff the jeans or have them hemmed for a clean look.
